Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders News Release
ABOUT LAST NIGHT: The RailRiders rallied from a 3-1 deficit with six runs in the fifth inning to bounce the Toledo Mud Hens at PNC Field last night, 9-3.
BACK ON TOP: The win vaulted the RailRiders back into first place atop the International League's North Division.
TRIPLE THREAT: Ben Gamel got the RailRiders on the board with an RBI triple in the third inning, his league-best 10th three-base hit of the year. He has more triples than Norfolk and stands even with Pawtucket. Gamel finished the game 2-for-5 with a run scored.
TRIPLE DOUBLE: Three different two-run doubles highlighted the pivotal fifth inning. Ramon Flores connected on the first one to tie the game, 3-3, while Kyle Roller came through with his two-bagger with the bases loaded to give SWB the lead for good. That knocked starter Mike Belfiore (4-9) out of the game while his successor, Alberto Cabrera, was greeted by a two-run double from Gregorio Petit.
FULL HOUSE: The RailRiders' first home game since July 9 saw a sellout crowd of 10,000 fill PNC Field. It made for the team's second sellout of the season along with the Fourth of July contest against Buffalo.
SEVERINO SPECIAL: Luis Severino (6-0) logged his first home win with five innings of three-run ball. He had not pitched since the Sunday before the All-Star break on July 12. He spent most of that time on the temporary inactive list for the birth of his daughter, Abigail. He tossed 33 pitches in the first inning while reaching three different full counts. He needed just 49 pitches to navigate the remaining four frames. After 10 starts, Severino is tied for the team lead in wins. The team improved to 8-2 when he starts.
@ELGARYSANCHEZ: Gary Sanchez singled home Flores in the sixth for his first home hit in his PNC Field debut. The catcher also walked twice and scored a run. Behind the plate, he caught Steven Moya trying to steal second base to end the visiting sixth. He has three multi-hit showings and six RBIs in his seven games played at Triple-A along with more walks (5) than strikeouts (3).
YOU DOWN WITH OBP?: Rob Refsnyder went 2-for-4 with an RBI, a walk and a run scored. He has hit safely in 17 of 19 at Triple-A going back to June 24. Over that stretch, he has hit .391/.518/.563/1.080 with the second-best OBP in all of MiLB. His average and OPS in that window each rank third the IL.
SMOKIN': Jose Pirela went 2-for-3 yesterday with a pair of doubles, two walks and two runs scored. He has seven multi-hit showing over his last 10 SWB games played. He has snapped out of a 5-for-49 (.102) slide at Triple-A with hits in eight of those 10 affairs. During his string, he has gone 18-for-41 (.439) with five doubles, four RBIs and 12 runs scored.
FREE BIRD: Greg Bird walked twice and scored once on an 0-for-2 night on Thursday. He has reached safely in all but one of his 17 games with SWB including a hit in 14 of those affairs while slashing .308/.392/.492/.884.
OFF THE RAILS: The RailRiders lead the IL in batting average (.273) and OBP (.341)...SWB must win four of its seven remaining July games to avoid a losing month...Over the first eight seasons as a Yankees affiliate, SWB logged a winning July six times and the two exceptions both saw the squad finish a game under .500...Tyler Austin hit ninth for the third time in as many days...He had never hit ninth before as a pro in 414 prior games over six seasons...Toledo owns the IL's worst team ERA (4.76) while turning a league-low 71 double plays...Only one other team has an ERA over 4.00 (Louisville, 4.16) and only one other squad has recorded fewer than 90 twin-killings (Rochester, 88)...The IL average in each category sits at 3.63 and 96.8 respectively.
