Big First Inning Costly vs. Clippers

July 25, 2015 - International League (IL1)
Rochester Red Wings News Release

COLUMBUS, OH - The Columbus Clippers scored four first-inning runs and held the Rochester Red Wings to one run on five hits en route to a 5-1 win Saturday night at Huntington Park.

The Red Wings (53-48) have now lost seven straight games in Columbus since 2013.

The Clippers (56-45) struck early and often against Wings starter Taylor Rogers (7-8), scoring four runs on five hits in the first inning. Rogers would settle down, allowing just one hit and two walks over the next four innings. Rochester's offense was silenced by Columbus starter Josh Tomlin, who was on a rehab assignment from the Cleveland Indians.

Rochester scored its only run of the game as James Beresford and Oswaldo Arcia hit back-to-back doubles to begin the fourth inning. Four of the Red Wings five at-bats with runners in scoring position came in that frame.

Rogers would depart in favor of Alex Meyer in the sixth. The Clippers added a run against Meyer in the inning to complete the scoring.

Tomlin yielded just the one run and scattered five hits with two strikeouts. Jarret Grube, the game's original scheduled starter, piggybacked Tomlin and pitched four perfect innings to end the game and secure his first save.

Next up: RHP Tyler Duffey starts for the Wings Sunday night in Columbus at 6:05 p.m.

Next Home Game: Friday, July 31 vs. Syracuse (Nationals) at 7:05 p.m.
