Charlotte Knights News Release

(LAWRENCEVILLE, GA) - RHP Kanekoa Texeira allowed just one earned run over six strong innings, Eric Young Jr. had a game-high three RBIs, and the Gwinnett Braves beat the Charlotte Knights by a score of 5-2 on Saturday in the middle game of a three-game series from Coolray Field in Lawrenceville, GA.

Texeira (2-3, 3.43) allowed a run in each of the first two innings, but the former Chicago White Sox farmhand settled down and was sharp over his final four frames en-route to his second win of the season. A native of Maui, Hawaii, Texeira gave up four hits, two runs (one earned), and two walks on Saturday while striking out six batters.

Originally drafted by the Chicago White Sox in the 22nd round of the 2006 draft, Texeira quickly made his way through Chicago's organization from 2006 to 2008, finishing the 2008 campaign with Double-A Birmingham. During the offseason (November 13, 2008), Texeira was traded to the New York Yankees along with Nick Swisher for Wilson Betemit, Jeff Marquez, and Jhonny Nunez. While Betemit, Marquez, and Nunez all played for the Knights over their career, Texeira never made it to Charlotte. Still, over the course of his nine-year career, the Hawaiian-born righty is no stranger to the Knights.

On Saturday, Texeira made his fourth appearance (second start) of the 2015 season against the Knights and earned the win. The 29-year-old improved to 2-2 with a 4.46 ERA in 10 career games against Charlotte.

While Texeira was sharp, Young Jr. paced Gwinnett's offense, which needed just eight hits on Saturday to notch their second consecutive win over the Knights. With Gwinnett ahead by a score of 3-2 in the bottom of the seventh inning, Young Jr. came through with a two-run double. Jose Peraza and Todd Cunningham chipped in with two hits apiece in the win.

The Charlotte Knights scored both of their runs over the first two innings courtesy of an RBI single from Matt Davidson in the first inning and a double from Drew Garcia in the second inning. Overall, the Knights, who dropped their third consecutive game, recorded just five hits on the night.

Charlotte starter Terance Marin (3-1, 1.78) gave up three runs (two earned) on five hits over five innings and was saddled with the loss. Chicago White Sox RHP Nate Jones made his third rehab appearance and allowed just one hit over a scoreless inning of work. RHP J.B. Wendelken, who was promoted to Charlotte from Double-A Birmingham earlier in the day, allowed two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. LHP Zach Phillips, a 2015 International League All-Star, pitched a scoreless eighth inning.

The two teams will conclude their three-game series on Sunday with a 2:05 p.m. matinee game from Coolray Field. Charlotte RHP Brad Penny (5-3, 4.09) is expected to get the start for the Knights in the finale. The G-Braves will hand the ball to RHP Williams Perez (2-1, 1.36). Pre-game radio coverage begins at 1:50 p.m. on ESPN 730 AM and www.charlotteknights.com. The "Voice of the Knights" Matt Swierad will have the call for all of the action.
