Jayson Werth Continues Rehab Saturday

July 25, 2015 - International League (IL1)
Lehigh Valley IronPigs News Release

Nationals OF Jayson Werth - sidelined since mid-May due to a fractured left wrist -- is scheduled to continue a rehab assignment when the IronPigs host the Syracuse Chiefs at Coca-Cola Park on Saturday, July 25, at 6:35 p.m. Only General Admission tickets are available for tonight's game while Field Level tickets still remain for Sunday's 1:35 p.m. contest. Good Shepherd Rehabilitation Network is the exclusive sponsor of all Major League rehabilitation appearances at Coca-Cola Park. He's gone 6-for-19 (.316) at the plate with a homer and 4 RBIs during the first six games of his rehab stint with Potomac (A+) and Syracuse.

Werth, 36, began the season on the disabled list due to off-season shoulder surgery and has been limited to just 27 games with the Nationals this year because of injuries, hitting .208 with two homers and 12 RBIs. He suffered his most recent wrist injury when getting hit by a fastball thrown by San Diego's Odrisamer Despaigne on May 15.

Werth signed a massive $126 million, seven-year contract with the Nationals prior to the 2011 season after helping to guide the Phillies to four straight NL East crowns from 2007-2010 as well as the 2008 World Series title. From 2008-2014, he was one of baseball's most complete hitters, batting .281 with 196 doubles, 153 home runs, 504 RBIs and 99 stolen bases in 956 games. Werth remains the Phillies all-time leader in post-season homers with 11 and his 14 career postseason long balls are fifth among active players trailing just Albert Pujols (19), David Ortiz (17), Carlos Beltran (16) and Nelson Cruz (16).

During the Phillies remarkable 2008 campaign, Werth had a breakout season with 24 home runs, including an MLB-best 16 long balls against left-handers, while also becoming just the ninth Phillie to post a 20-homer, 20-stolen base season. In 2009, he earned his first All-Star nod, posted his second straight 20-homer, 20-stolen base campaign and logged a career-high 36 home runs and 99 RBIs. In his final season with the Phillies in 2010, he finished with an NL-leading 46 doubles and established career highs in hits (164), doubles, extra-base hits (75), runs (106) and slugging percentage (.532). Interestingly, Werth also played in the first-ever game at Coca-Cola Park - an exhibition game between the Phillies and IronPigs on March 30, 2008 - and went 0-for-4 with a run scored in the Phillies' 5-3 win.

In his first four seasons with the Nationals, Werth has battled injuries to help Washington advance to the post-season on a pair of occasions in 2012 and 2014.

The Springfield, Ill. native was originally drafted by Baltimore in the 1st round (22nd overall pick) of the 1997 draft and made his Major League debut in 2002 with Toronto. In parts of 13 seasons with Toronto, Los Angeles-NL, Philadephia and Washington, he's hit .276 with 186 homers and 659 RBIs in 1309 games.
