Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp News Release
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Jacksonville Suns will finish their regular season in Birmingham this weekend before returning home to the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville to host games one and two of the Southern League South Division Championship on Thursday and Friday, September 8 and 9.
During the playoffs, the Suns will donate $1.00 for every ticket sold to the American Red Cross to assist in the relief efforts for the damage caused by Hurricane Katrina. In addition, the Suns will also be accepting monetary donations during all playoff games for fans to contribute additional funds to help the ravaged Gulf Coast.
"After we watched Florida get hit by three hurricanes last year, the devastation brought on the Gulf Coast by Katrina has really hit home with us," said Suns General Manager Peter Bragan, Jr. "We want to do everything we can to help our neighbors in their most desperate hour and we hope our fans will do the same."
The Suns will be playing the Birmingham Barons for the right to advance to the Southern League finals. The Barons clinched a playoff birth by virtue of having the second best overall record in the division. The second half title is still up for grabs as the Suns and Barons battle in the final four games of the season.
Thursday night's playoff game will also feature The Blues Brothers, who will perform all during the game and fans can also enjoy the last Thursday Night Throwdown, with Buds for a Buck, sponsored by Budweiser and Planet Radio 93.3FM.
On Friday, the first 2,500 fans will receive a free Homer Hankie, sponsored by Coca-Cola and The New 99.1 WQIK, featuring the autographs of the entire 2005 Suns team, who were named the "Most Talented Team" in baseball by Baseball America. Fans will also enjoy the last Friday Family Fireworks show after the game, sponsored by Comcast Spotlight and J.D. Byrider.
Should the Suns overtake the Barons or the second half title, the two teams will travel to Birmingham for game three of the series, then return to Jacksonville for games four and five, if necessary. The winner of the South Division Championship will move on to the Southern League Finals to face either the Carolina Mudcats or West Tenn Diamond Jaxx.
Tickets for the the playoffs are currently available by calling the Suns ticket office at 358-2846 or by ordering online at www.jaxsuns.com.
