Birmingham Barons News Release

BIRMINGHAM, AL- The Birmingham Barons took one step closer to clinching the second half Southern Division Title by defeating the Jacksonville Suns 2-1 on Friday night at the Hoover Met in front of 3,903 fans. With the win, the Barons magic number falls to two and with just one more win over the Suns, Birmingham will clinch the title.

The victory came behind an outstanding pitching performance by Barons starting pitcher Sean Tracey. Tracey tossed eight solid innings and gave up just one run on seven hits while striking out three to record his league-leading 14th win. The win also came on a night when Tracey was named the Barons Most Valuable Pitcher after the game along with the Most Valuable Player leftfielder Jerry Owens.

The offense supplied Tracey with just enough as they scored a run in the bottom of the second on back-to-back doubles by Ryan Sweeney and Josh Fields and then capped the scoring on a solo blast by Casey Rogowski in the fourth inning.

Jacksonville plated one run in the fifth on a RBI single by Nick Alvarez but Tracey kept the off the board for the rest of the night. The Suns mounted a late rally in the top of the ninth when they chased Tracey with back-to-back singles to leadoff the inning. Dwayne Pollok came on in relief and induced a double play groundout followed by another groundout to shortstop to slam the door and notch his 11th save of the season.

Game two tomorrow night will feature RHP Charlie Haeger (6-3, 3.60) versus RHP William Juarez (6-5, 4.39) with game time set for 7:00 PM.
