Mobile BayBears News Release
Mobile, AL-BayBears pitcher Jared Wells and Catcher Luke Carlin have left the team to represent their county in the Baseball World Cup which begins today in the Netherlands. Former BayBear JJ Trujillo will join Jared Wells on team USA pitching staff. Carlin will play for team Canada.
The 36th Baseball World Cup will be held in the Netherlands this year and will field 18 teams from all five continents. This event is held every two years since originating in 1938. Multiple winners include Cuba (24 titles), Columbia (2 titles), and the Unites States (2 titles). Team Canada's best finish to date has been fifth place.
The U.S. roster consists of professionals not on a Major League team's 40-man major roster. It's the fifth time USA Baseball has used professionals, following the 1999 Pan American Games, the 2000 Sydney Olympics, the 2001 World Cup and the 2003 Olympic qualifier. In 2000, Sean Burroughs left the BayBears early to play for Team USA and Tommy Lasorda at the Sydney Olympic games, that team brought home the gold medal.
Wells, 23, joined the BayBears in late July after tearing up the California League at Single A Lake Elsinore. The Brazoria, Texas native, is ranked the number 15 prospect in the Padres system by Baseball America entering the 2005 season. Before his promotion to Mobile, Jared was 11-3 at Lake Elsinore, striking out 80 and walking 26 in 120 innings. With the BayBears Wells was 2-5 in seven starts.
Carlin, 24, has been with the BayBears the entire 2005 season. Luke is a native of Quebec and will play for Team Canada. The catcher has played in 88 games this season hitting .257. The Padres signed Carlin as a minor league free agent in 2003.
Trujillo, 29, played for the BayBears in parts of three season from 2001-2003. In 2002 he reached the Majors with the Padres. JJ was the 2002 Pitcher of the Year for the BayBears. He also holds the BayBears club records for most career games by a pitcher (102) and most consecutive scoreless innings (24.2).
