Birmingham Barons News Release

BIRMINGHAM, AL -The Birmingham Barons are proud to announce that Razor Shines has been named the Southern League Manager of the Year for the 2005 season. Shines, in his second season at the helm in Birmingham, has led the Barons to the playoffs in both of his seasons as manager and has compiled a 151-123 (.551) record over that span. He becomes the first Barons manager to win the award since Wally Backman won the award in Birmingham's 2002 championship season.

The 2005 Birmingham Barons have been a model of consistency the entire season, posting a 36-33 first half record and a second place finish in the South Division and compiling an even stronger record in the second half. The Barons are currently in first place with a 42-24 record and maintain a one game lead on Jacksonville with four games in Birmingham against the Suns left to play to decide the second half champion. Birmingham currently sports the most prolific offense in the Southern League as they lead the league in batting (.278) and runs scored (706) and have several players ranked at or near the top of the league in several offensive categories.

Shines, 48, has been in the White Sox organization for the past five seasons as a manager and also complied a 16 year playing career from 1978-1993 which included 68 games in the Major Leagues with the Montreal Expos. He led the Winston-Salem Warthogs to the Carolina League Championship in 2003 after posting a 71-67 record and was also named as the mid-season All-Star manager in 2001 with Kannapolis.
