Sugar Land Slugs Their Way to Win over Jacksonville

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - After two five run innings, the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp fell to the Sugar Land Space Cowboys 10-3 Wednesday afternoon at VyStar Ballpark.

Sugar Land (4-1) opened the scoring in the top of the second. Cavan Biggio started the frame with a single and Collin Price was hit by a pitch in the ensuing at-bat. Two batters later, César Salazar walked to load the bases. Taylor Trammell continued his hot hitting with a two-run double, plating Biggio and Price. Shay Whitcomb (2) followed with a three-run homer, blowing the game open 5-0.

Jacksonville (1-4) slowly came back starting in the bottom of the second. Daniel Johnson and Jacob Berry began the inning with consecutive singles. Following a double play, Brian Navarreto ripped a double, plating Johnson, cutting the deficit to 5-1.

The Jumbo Shrimp added another run in the third. Matthew Etzel walked and Nathan Martorella singled. Ethan O'Donnell walked to load the bases. Etzel scored from third on a double play, making it a three-run game.

Jacksonville's final tally came in the bottom of the fourth. After two quick outs, Navarreto (1) swatted a solo homer, drawing the Jumbo Shrimp closer 5-3.

The Space Cowboys offense reignited in the sixth. With one out, Kellen Strahm walked and Salazar singled, pushing Strahm to third. A sacrifice bunt plated Strahm and Whitcomb blasted a two-run homer, his second of the game, increasing the lead to 8-3. Jack Winkler singled in the ensuing at-bat and scored on a two-run homer from CJ Alexander (3) for a 10-3 advantage.

Jacksonville and Sugar Land continue their series with Thursday's 7:05 p.m. contest. LHP Patrick Monteverde (0-0, 27.00 ERA) gets the ball for the Jumbo Shrimp against Space Cowboys' LHP Colton Gordon (0-0, 0.00).
