Durham Bulls News Release
Durham, NC - Jesse Scholtens threw two-hit ball over five innings while Dom Keegan homered and drove in two as the Durham Bulls won their first game of the season 5-1 over the Lehigh Valley IronPigs on Wednesday night at the DBAP.
Scholtens (W, 1-0) was sharp throughout his 60-pitch effort. Scholtens fanned four, walking none and did not reach a three-ball count in the outing.
Durham (1-4) scored twice in the first, building a rally with two outs. Justyn-Henry Malloy was hit by a pitch with two down, then stole second. Jacob Melton singled him to third, then the pair executed a double steal to put the Bulls up 1-0. Melton broke for second, drawing a throw from catcher Caleb Ricketts, and Malloy beat the return throw at home plate. Melton then scored on an error by third baseman Carter Kieboom.
Keegan homered to lead off the fourth inning, then singled home a run in the eighth. Hunter Bigge (1IP/1ER), Cam Booser (1IP/0ER), Luis Guerrero (1IP/0ER) and Trevor Martin (1IP/0ER) combined for the final four innings, permitting one run and just three hits.
Durham swiped five bases in the win over the IronPigs (4-1).
Logan Workman (0-1, 21.60) is slated to start Thursday night at 6:45 PM ET against Alan Rangel (0-0, 1.93).
Notes: Durham's first victory of the season ended the worst start by any Bulls team in their Triple-A history, dating back to 1998. The Bulls had never started a season 0-4, with 0-3 starts in 2008 and 2023 representing their slowest stride out of the gates.... The Bulls win also knocked Lehigh Valley from the ranks of the unbeaten, with only the Memphis Redbirds (5-0) still undefeated.... Durham's win over the Iron Pigs also snapped a personal 10-game losing streak to Lehigh Valley. The Bulls' last win over Lehigh Valley was June 27th, 2024. The Bulls lost last night's game against the Iron Pigs, were swept all six games in Lehigh Valley last August and had dropped the final three meetings of 2024.... Hunter Bigge, who suffered serious facial injuries last May when struck by a foul ball while sitting in the Rays' dugout in a game against the Baltimore Orioles, saw a 103mph liner drilled right over his head against the first batter he faced on Wednesday night. Paul McIntosh smacked the liner over Bigge, whose follow through of the pitch took him just beneath the flight of the ball. Second baseman Cooper Bowman made the play for the out. Several Bulls players walked toward the mound to check on Bigge after the play..... Former Baltimore Orioles manager Brandon Hyde joined the Bulls broadcast for several innings. Hyde is now working as a special advisor to the Tampa Bay Rays front office.
