Storm Chasers Notch Seventh Shutout of the Season
August 1, 2013 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Omaha Storm Chasers News Release
OMAHA, Neb. - The Omaha Storm Chasers (55-57) extended their lead in the American Conference Northern Division to 2.0 games with an 8-0 win against the Tacoma Rainiers (60-52), their sixth win in the last seven games. It was Omaha's eighth consecutive win at Cheney Stadium, the longest active road winning streak against any PCL opponent, as well as their 12th win in the last 14 games against the Rainiers.
Storm Chasers starter Chris Dwyer even up his record this season at 8-8 tossing six shutout innings, his second scoreless start this season. Dwyer has posted a quality start in all three of his outings since the All-Star Break, and in those three starts has allowed four total runs in 19.0 innings (1.89 ERA). The Omaha pitching staff allowed only two hits on the night, a new season low.
With the shutout the Omaha pitching staff finished the month of July with a PCL-leading 3.12 ERA, the lowest ERA any team in the PCL has ended a month with in the entire 2013 season. It is the lowest ERA for the Storm Chasers since the opening month of their 2011 Championship season, when Omaha posted a 3.02 ERA. The Chasers have allowed one run or less in six of their last nine games.
On the offensive side of the ball, Omaha tied their third largest hit total of the year with 15 knocks on the night. The 3-through-6 batters of Max Ramirez, Ben Broussard, Brian Fletcher and Pedro Ciriaco went a combined 10-for-18 in the game and drove in five of the eight runs. Broussard and Fletcher led the team with three hits in the win, and Broussard has 14 hits during his eight-game hitting streak while Fletcher collected his first career Triple-A multi hit game.
Omaha finished the month of July tied with Salt Lake and Oklahoma City for the best record in the league at 18-10. The 2.0-game lead the Chasers now own over the Memphis Redbirds is their largest lead since April 27, and Omaha has only lost one of six road games since the All-Star Break.
The Chasers will search for their ninth consecutive win in Tacoma as they send out left-hander Everett Teaford (3-2, 2.78), who has not suffered the loss as a starter for Omaha since April of the 2011 season (a span of 19 starts). Teaford will match up with a top-ten Mariners prospect in lefty James Paxton (7-8, 4.17) with first pitch set for 9:00 p.m. CDT on 1180 Zone 2 The Deuce and www.omahastormchasers.com.
