Oklahoma City Comets News Release
OKLAHOMA CITY - Hertz and the Oklahoma City RedHawks are pleased to announce they will honor the career of former Major League catcher and Oklahoma City native Mickey Tettleton Friday, August 2 at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark prior to the RedHawks game.
The event is part of the Hertz Grand Slam Mission, combining youth, teamwork, and education in an initiative to provide opportunities for coaches and student-athletes in the Oklahoma City and surrounding communities, as well as serving to honor the city's rich baseball history.
"Mickey Tetttleton is one of Oklahoma's own," RedHawks President & General Manager Michael Byrnes said. "We're glad Hertz has given us this opportunity to recognize him and the wonderful career he's had, and the way he's always represented Oklahoma City."
As part of the festivities, Tettleton will receive an award from Hertz and the RedHawks, and he will throw out a ceremonial first pitch. Tettleton will also sign autographs on the concourse thereafter.
Tettleton spent 14 years in the Major Leagues, suiting up for the Oakland A's, Baltimore Orioles, Detroit Tigers, and Texas Rangers. He was a two-time American League All-Star and a three-time winner of the Silver Slugger Award, given to the best hitter at each position.
Over his career he batted .241 with 245 home runs and 732 RBI. During his time with the Rangers he had a chance to play for the Oklahoma City 89ers and Tulsa Drillers as part of a rehab assignment.
Tettleton was born and raised in Oklahoma City. He attended Southeast High School before heading to Oklahoma State, where he helped the Cowboys reach the 1981 College World Series finals. He began his professional career after getting drafted by the Oakland A's later that year.
Tettleton currently resides in Norman and stays connected to baseball by giving hitting lessons throughout south Oklahoma City.
