Oklahoma City Comets News Release
Today's Game: Oklahoma City continues a four-game series against Reno with a 7:05 p.m. game at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark. A win tonight would match their longest winning streak of the season at seven games, first set April 26-May 2.
Last Game: Brandon Laird's single to center field scored Che-Hsuan Lin in the bottom of the ninth for a 4-3 walk-off win over Reno Wednesday at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark. The RedHawks took a 3-2 lead into the ninth inning before Reno scored in the top of the frame. RedHawks reliever Jason Stoffel walked Juan Rivera to start the inning, and Rivera eventually scored on a wild pitch. Stoffel (6-1) did a good job to regroup and work out of a bases-loaded, one-out jam to keep the game tied. In the bottom of the inning, Lin was hit by a pitch to lead off. He advanced to second on a groundout by Jose Martinez and scored on Laird's broken-bat hit to shallow center field. The RedHawks scored first, but Rivera's two-run homer to left field in the fourth put the Aces ahead, 2-1. Trevor Crowe tied the game in the bottom of the inning, and Carlos Perez gave OKC a 3-2 lead in the sixth with a sac fly. RedHawks starting pitcher Wade LeBlanc threw 6.2 innings, allowing two runs on four hits, walking one and striking out a season-high eight.
Today's Probable Pitcher: Paul Clemens returns to the RedHawks after spending most of the season with the Astros...Clemens made 30 relief appearances for the Astros and went 4-4 with a 6.36 ERA. He allowed six runs in the seventh inning during his last outing Friday at Toronto, picking up the loss. He was optioned to Oklahoma City July 29...After starting the year with the RedHawks, Clemens made his Major League debut on April 9 in Seattle and earned the win after throwing four innings of relief...His lone start of the season with the RedHawks was in game two of a doubleheader in Memphis on April 5. He pitched five innings, allowing three runs and seven hits with three strikeouts and no walks. He was the winning pitcher in what was the RedHawks first win of the season...Clemens started 20 games for the RedHawks in 2012, going 8-8 with a 6.73 ERA. He led the team in both wins and innings (101.2 IP)...Clemens last pitched against the Aces on May 17, 2012 in Reno. He allowed five runs on six hits in 5.1 innings, struck out two and walked two as he recorded the win.
Against the Aces: 2013: 2-0 2012: 2-2 All-time: 11-7 In OKC: 8-2
With last night's win, the RedHawks have won eight of 10 all-time meetings at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark, including six of the last seven...Reno and Oklahoma City split their four-game series, 2-2, in 2012 at Aces Ballpark. It was an offensively-charged series with both teams scoring 36 runs apiece and each reaching 10 runs in a game twice. The RedHawks hit an astounding 12 home runs over the four games (Reno hit six)...Through two games, the RedHawks and Aces have combined for two extra-base hits after combining for 44 extra-base hits last season...Oklahoma City has won 10 of the last 14 games between the teams...This series marks the Aces' first visit to Bricktown since Aug. 16-19, 2011. The RedHawks took three of four, and three games were decided by one or two runs.
Moving Van: Earlier today, the Houston Astros recalled RedHawks outfielder Jimmy Paredes. Paredes had been a hot hitter, batting .349 over his last 11 games. He'll leave OKC on a 10-game hitting streak. In corresponding moves, the RedHawks have added both catcher Rene Garcia and pitcher Bobby Doran from Double-A Corpus Christi. Garcia was having a career year with the Hooks, batting .304 with five homers and 36 RBI. The 2013 Texas League All-Star also has thrown out 51 percent of attempted base stealers to lead all of Double-A and rank third in all of the Minors. Doran is no stranger to the team, having made two spots starts for the RedHawks this season (0-0, 3.60 ERA). Doran was 8-2 with a 3.26 ERA with Corpus Christi.
High-Water Mark: With Wednesday's win, the RedHawks now sit 12 games above .500 for the first time this season and have won six games in a row for the first time since winning seven straight April 26-May 2.
Leaders, Not Followers: During their current six-game winning streak, the RedHawks have yet to trail for a full inning. The opposing team has taken the lead in the top of an inning twice, but the RedHawks have tied it up in the bottom of the inning each time.
Don't Want to Say Goodbye to July: The RedHawks went 18-10 in July and tied Omaha and Salt Lake for the league's best record. It's also the most wins they've recorded in a single month since going 18-12 in August 2011.
Mound Magic: Since the All-Star Break, the RedHawks have a 2.40 ERA (35 ER/131.1 IP). The starters have combined for a 2.25 ERA (23 ER/92.0 IP) and allowed more than two earned runs in a game just twice.
Late-Inning Drama: Last night was the ninth time this season the RedHawks could not hang on to a lead in the final inning. However, yesterday was the third time they were able to still come away with a win.
Man in the Middle: Including last night, Brandon Laird has either driven in or scored the game-winning run in four of the team's six walk-off victories. He was also at the plate when George Springer scored the winning run on a wild pitch Monday night.
As the Crowe Flies: Trevor Crowe broke an 0-for-9 drought by going 3-for-4 with an RBI last night. He is 4-for-14 over the first three games of his rehab assignment. Crowe has been sidelined since spraining the AC joint in his right shoulder on June 20. He spent the first month of the season with the RedHawks, hitting .307/2/14. The RedHawks are 12-2 when Crowe leads off this season.
Final Four: The RedHawks have won each of their last four games, scoring exactly four runs in each victory.
