Iowa Cubs News Release

Salt Lake City, UT - The Iowa Cubs (51-61) have matched their longest losing streak of the season, falling 6-3 to the Salt Lake Bees (63-49) at Spring Mobile Ballpark tonight for their sixth straight loss. The Cubs have lost nine straight road games and finish with a league-low 9-19 record in July.

The game was scoreless through the first four innings before the Bees broke through against Cubs' starter Justin Grimm in the fifth. With one out, Scott Cousins struck out, but reached first base on a wild pitch. After a groundout, Drew Heid laced an RBI triple to deep right-center field to drive in the game's first run. The Bees added a second run in the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Roberto Lopez, who picked up in the middle of an at-bat for Luis Rodriguez. Rodriguez injured his left wrist while swinging at the first pitch. Grimm (1-2) came out after five inning. He allowed two runs on four hits, walked three, and struck out the five, but suffered the loss.

The Bees broke the game open with four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning against Marcus Hatley. The first five batters all singled to produce two runs, but the Cubs did get one out on a rundown play. A third run scored on a wild pitch and Hatley came out of the game after a walk to Heid that put runners on first and second. Matt Long greeted Marcos Mateo with a double to drive in the final run, before Mateo got out of the inning. The Bees' rally ended Hatley's streak of 8.1 consecutive scoreless innings over his last eight appearances. Mateo, making his first appearance since joining the Cubs from double-A, struck out the side in the eighth.

Bees' starter Billy Buckner didn't allow a hit, walked two, and struck out four through four innings in his first game back with Salt Lake after getting outrighted by the Los Angeles Angels. Mike Ekstrom (3-3) followed with two scoreless innings in relief and was credited with the win. Chad Cordero followed with a scoreless seventh, but the Cubs rallied against the right-hander in the eighth.

Jae-Hoon Ha led off with an infield single for his second hit of the game. Darnell McDonald followed with a double and both runners scored on a J.C. Boscan's double down the right field line. It was Boscan's second hit of the game and his first extra-base hit since July 12. After a flyout, Donnie Murphy was called out on strikes for the second time in the game. He was ejected by home plate umpire Spencer Flynn after expressing his view on the call. Edgar Gonzalez came through with a two-out hit to drive in Boscan for a third run of the inning, but Fernando Cabrera came in and got out of the inning. Kevin Johnson allowed a hit to McDonald and walked Boscan in the ninth, but closed out the game for his second save.

The Cubs and Bees play game three of this series tomorrow night at 8:05 Central time at Spring Mobile Ballpark. RH Barret Loux (4-5, 4.34) will start for the Cubs against RH Barry Enright (5-5, 7.13) for the Bees. The game will be broadcast live on AM 940, and streamed live at iowacubs.com, with the On-Deck Circle Pre-Game Show starting at 7:45.
