New Orleans Baby Cakes News Release
Kyle Jensen had four hits and three RBI, and the New Orleans Zephyrs rallied for four runs in the seventh inning and three more runs in the eighth to beat the Colorado Springs Sky Sox, 9-3 on Thursday night.
Jensen, who entered the game hitless in his last 23 at-bats, broke through with a single to lead off the fifth inning, starting a two-run Zephyrs rally.
Jensen added a single in the sixth, a two-run double in the seventh and an RBI single in the eighth to collect four hits in four consecutive innings and tally his first four-hit game at the Triple-A level.
Jared Rogers and Collin McHugh dueled for four scoreless innings until the Sky Sox got on the board in the fifth. Xavier Nady ripped a leadoff double to right field, and a one-out walk to Lars Davis put runners at the corners for McHugh. The Sky Sox elected to let their pitcher swing away, and the move paid off as McHugh went the other way for an RBI single. Josh Rutledge added a run-scoring ground out for a 2-0 Colorado Springs lead.
The Zephyrs answered with two runs of their own in the bottom of the inning. After Jensen's leadoff single, Kyle Skipworth and pinch-hitter Jordan Brown followed with singles to load the bases. Kevin Mattison drew a walk to force in a run, and Gil Velazquez lined a single to right to tie the game and knock McHugh out, but Cory Riordan got Bryan Petersen to bounce into an inning-ending double play.
Colorado Springs again grabbed a brief lead in the seventh, again kick-started by Nady, who led off with a single. Z's reliever Zach Phillips loaded the bases two batters later with a walk to Jordan Pacheco, and the Sox grabbed the lead with Rutledge singled off Jonathan Albaladejo .
New Orleans batted around in the bottom of the frame to take the lead for good. Colorado Springs reliever Coty Woods loaded the bases with one out and Mitchell Boggs was summoned in relief, but allowed a game-tying single to Kevin Kouzmanoff and a sacrifice fly by Joe Mahoney to give the Zephyrs a 4-3 advantage. The lead stretched to 6-3 on Jensen's two-run double.
The Zephyrs added three more runs off Boggs in the eighth, on a ground out by Kouzmoanoff and run-scoring singles by Mahoney and Jensen.
Albaladejo (4-4) was credited with the win, scattering three hits in 1 2/3 scoreless innings of relief. Woods (3-3) was charged with the loss after yielding three runs while recording just one out.
New Orleans and Colorado Springs conclude the four-game series on Friday at 7 p.m.
