Round Rock Express News Release
FRESNO, Calif. - A late rally was cut short as the Round Rock Express (62-50) dropped its second straight game to the Fresno Grizzlies (51-60) 5-3 Wednesday night.
Express right-hander Evan Meek started strong, allowing just one hit through the first three innings. Fresno broke through in the fourth when shortstop Ehire Adrianza led off the frame with a triple and scored on a throwing error by right fielder Joey Butler for the game's first run.
The Grizzlies added scores in the fifth and sixth, using RBI singles by Adrianza and designated hitter Carter Jurica to build a 3-0 lead.
Round Rock fought back in the seventh with the help of a two-out rally. With two on and two outs, first baseman Mike Bianucci delivered a RBI single to center, putting the Express on the scoreboard. The E-Train later loaded the bases and pushed the second run across the plate when third baseman Alex Buchholz reached on an infield single that allowed Butler to score, cutting the lead to one at 3-2.
The Express bullpen could not slow the Fresno offense as the Grizzlies put two more runs back on the board in the bottom of the seventh. With right-hander Johan Yan on the hill after taking over for Meek in the sixth, Fresno put runners on first and third with one out to start the inning. First baseman Johnny Monell plated the first run of the frame with a RBI double that chased Yan from the game. Right-hander Wilmer Font entered with runners on second and third and issued a walk to the first batter he faced which loaded the bases. After a strikeout, Font uncorked a wild pitch that allowed the second run of the inning to cross the plate before finishing the frame with a punch out two batters later.
Shortstop Leury Garcia set the table for the E-Train in the eighth, tripling to begin the inning and starting yet another rally. The Express wasted no time bringing Garcia home as center fielder Jim Adduci lofted a fly ball deep enough to left field to allow Garcia to score, cutting the lead to 5-3.
Unfortunately, Garcia would be the last Express player to cross the plate Wednesday night as designated hitter Manny Ramirez and Buchholz were each stranded on second base in the eighth and ninth, respectively, after roping a pair of doubles.
Meek suffered the loss, dropping to 5-6, while Fresno southpaw Mike Kickham (4-7) earned the victory after holding the E-Train to two runs on one hit over 6.2 innings of work.
The Express and Grizzlies will play game three of the four-game set Thursday night at 9:05 p.m. Southpaw Ryan Feierabend (5-3, 3.86 ERA) will take the mound for Round Rock, while Fresno counters with right-hander Justin Fitzgerald (1-3, 5.94 ERA).
