MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Pinch hitter Ryan Jackson hit a sacrifice fly in the 10th inning to give the Memphis Redbirds a 2-1 victory over the Tucson Padres in front of 9,279 fans at AutoZone Park on Thursday night.
It was the 11th last at-bat victory for Memphis, which improved to 5-7 in extra-inning play this season. Outfielder Justin Christian recorded first hit of the night to lead off the 10th inning. He advanced to second on a sacrifice but, moved to third on a Travis Tartamella single, and scored the winning run as Brad Boxberger (2-4) surrendered the sacrifice fly.
Sam Freeman (6-2) tossed two scoreless innings in his team-leading 42nd appearance for the win.
Redbirds leadoff hitter Mike O'Neill had two hits and scored a run for the second straight night. Second baseman Kolten Wong added two hits and an RBI.
Tucson scored their only run in top of the first as Dan Robertson lined the second pitch of the game to left for a single. He moved to second base on a wild pitch and came around to score on a Brandon Allen RBI base hit.
Memphis knotted the score at 1-1 in the sixth inning. O'Neill's second hit of the game began the rally, followed by a base hit from Jermaine Curtis. Wong followed with an RBI single to right to score O'Neill from second base.
Both starting pitchers came away with no-decisions. Boone Whiting yielded one run on five hits and a pair of walks in five innings. Tucson's Matt Andriese scattered six hits for a runs with four strikeouts in seven frames.
Victor Marte fanned two over two scoreless innings. Eric Fornataro followed with one shutout frame.
The two teams conclude their series at 7:05 pm CT on Throwback Night at AutoZone Park on Friday, when the Redbirds will be wearing commemorative Memphis Chicks jerseys. Memphis right-hander Carlos Martinez (3-2, 1.76) will take the mound against Tucson right-hander Burch Smith (3-1, 3.13).
