South Carolina Stingrays News Release
Biloxi, MS - Playing in their second game of a three game series against the Mississippi Sea Wolves, the South Carolina Stingrays took the lead early, but fell late, 3-1 at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum.
"Every loss right now is a tough loss," said Stingrays Head Coach Jared Bednar. "I felt that the guys were a little too lackadaisical on the ice. I was not happy with their effort out their today."
After skating the majority of the first period scoreless, the Rays took the lead with less than two minutes to play on Tom Maxwell's fourth goal of the season. After Nate Kiser got a rebound of his own shot, he fired another one towards the net that was deflected in by Maxwell to give the Rays the 1-0 lead going into the locker room.
The lead was short lived as Mississippi tied things up at one on a power play goal by Kyle McAllister, his fourth goal of the season. After a few good chances, two of them shorthanded, going by the books, the Rays and Sea Wolves went into the second intermission knotted up at a goal a piece.
Late in the third period Chase Trull, playing in just his first game this season against the Stingrays, got a pass right at the top of the slot and fired it by Michal Neuvirth to give the Sea Wolves their first lead of the night, 2-1. With a little over a minute to go, and skating four on four, Bednar pulled Neuvirth in favor of the extra attacker. After a shot from Kiser was blocked by Trull the puck slipped into neutral ice where Mark Rooneem found it to get his fourth goal of the year, an empty netter to make the score 3-1, the eventual final.
The winning goaltender was Jeremy Duchesne who stopped 19 of the 20 shots he faced. The losing goaltender was Neuvirth who stopped 21 of the 23 shots he faced. The Mississippi Sea Wolves have now won three straight games after their 10-0 loss to the Rays last Sunday. Since that game the Rays are 0-1-1, both losses coming to the Wolves.
The Rays will be back in action tomorrow night when they finish their three in three against Mississippi. Game time will be at 8:00 P.M. eastern time. You can hear the game live on ESPN radio 910 the TEAM starting with the Benitos pre-game show beginning at 7:50.
