Johnstown Chiefs News Release

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. - The Johnstown Chiefs defeated the Trenton Devils 3-2 in a shootout Friday night to earn their 11th win in their last 12 games.

The Chiefs improved to 14-4-0, and remain in first place in the North Division.

Andrew Sarauer picked up where he left off on Wednesday by scoring 3:56 into the game. Sarauer, who scored all three of the Chiefs goals in Wednesday's victory over Wheeling, took a beautiful centering pass from Ryan Del Monte and tipped the puck over the glove of Gerald Coleman for his 10th goal of the season. Kris Mayotte also was credited with an assist, and stopped all seven shots he faced to keep it 1-0 at the end of one period.

Trenton evened the score at 1-1 on a power play goal with 2:10 left in the second after a hooking call on David Schulz. Jeff Prough scored his fourth goal of the season with assists from Jeremy Akeson and David Leaderer, and that is the way the second ended.

Trenton took the 2-1 lead just 11 seconds into the third period with an unassisted goal from Akeson. Akeson took the puck off a Chiefs turnover and beat Mayotte with a wrist shot. After back-to-back saves late in the game Gerald Coleman left with an injury and was replaced by Charlie Effinger with 1:57 remaining. Down one goal with 48 seconds left, the Chiefs pulled Mayotte for an extra attacker and just 18 seconds later it paid off as Del Monte took a pass from Sarauer from behind the net and beat Effinger to tie the game 2-2 with 30 seconds remaining. Peter Pohl also assisted on the goal that sent the game to overtime.

The Chiefs were unable to capitalize on a 4-on-3 power play in overtime, and neither team scored in the extra period to force the shootout.

Mayotte remained undefeated in shootouts this season stopping 9 out of 11 shots. Down to their last shot, down 2-1 in the shootout, Randy Rowe beat Effinger to keep the Chiefs alive. Then in the 11th round, Petr Pohl scored on Effinger for the second time during the shootout to send the Chiefs home victorious.

Mayotte stopped 26 shots to improve to 10-1-0 while the Chiefs were 0-for-5 on the power play.
