Reading Royals News Release
Reading, PA - The Reading Royals of the ECHL, affiliate of the Toronto Maple Leafs of the National Hockey League and the Toronto Marlies of the American Hockey League, today announced that the organization has signed forward Chris Bala ["BA luh"]. In separate transactions, the Royals also: (i) loaned defenseman Pat Wellar to the Hershey Bears of the AHL; and (ii) signed goaltender Bryan Bridges to an ECHL contract.
This marks the fourth consecutive season in which Bala (6'1"/195) (30) has played for the Royals. Last year, in four games with the team, he picked up an assist and registered two penalty minutes. Two seasons ago, in his final full year of pro, Bala, who hails from Pottstown, Pennsylvania, scored nineteen goals and assisted on twenty-eight others (forty-seven points) in fifty-eight games for Reading. That season, Bala, who played his college hockey at Harvard University, served as the Royals' team captain and was named as the team's Most Valuable Player at the Fans' Choice Awards Banquet. A former second round pick of the Ottawa Senators (#58 overall) in the 1998 NHL Entry Draft, Bala played six games with the Senators, recording an NHL assist, in 2002.
The Royals return to action tonight at the Sovereign Center on Friday, November 28 (7:05), when the Florida Everblades visit Reading for the first time in regular season history. Friday's game will be broadcast live on the Royals Radio Network Presented by Transmissions by Arbogast (True Oldies WRAW 1340 am in Reading; and The Ticket WLAN 1390 am in Lancaster), as well as on the internet via webcast hosted by Sportsjuice.com, which can be accessed through the Royals website.
