
Stingrays Topple Jackals 5-0 for Second Consecutive Shutout Victory

Elmira, N.Y. - Goaltender Jeff Jakaitis recorded his second consecutive shutout making 17 saves and forward Wayne Simpson scored a goal and two assists to send the South Carolina Stingrays (8-9-0-4) over the Elmira Jackals (11-6-0-3) 5-0 at First Arena Friday evening.
The Stingrays kicked off the scoring at 13:24 of the opening the period when forward Brock Higgs smack a bouncing puck past Jackals goaltender Sam Marotta (L, 11 saves on 14 shots) from between the faceoff circles. Forwards Braden Pimm and Simpson added assists.
In the second period, the Stingrays lit the lamp four times and took a 5-0 lead into the intermission break. Forward Joe Devin buried a power-play marker 5:00 into the frame with the help from defenseman Garrett Haar and forward Brandon Hynes. Moments later, forward Derek DeBlois tipped in a loose puck off a blast from the right point from defenseman Marcus Perrier at 8:03. Forward Anthony Collins grabbed the second assist. Following the tally, the Jackals pulled Marotta in favor of Travis Fullerton (10 saves on 12 shots). Haar added his third goal of the season on the man advantage at 12:47 firing a low shot through a screen setup by forward Branden Gracel and Simpson. Simpson registered his third point of the contest at 15:28 sneaking in his sixth goal of the season past an unsuspecting Fullerton at the left post. Gracel acquired the lone assist.
Shut-down defense prevailed for the Stingrays in the third period to keep the Jackals off the score sheet. The Stingrays finished the contest 2-for-3 on the power play while the Jackals went 0-for-3.
The Stingrays continue a three-game in three-day road trip tomorrow, Saturday December 6 against the Reading Royals at 7:05 p.m. and Sunday, December 7 at 5:05 p.m. at Santander Arena in Reading, Pennsylvania.
