Wheeling, West Virginia - The Wheeling Nailers defeated the Utah Grizzlies 5-2 Friday night at WesBanco Arena.
Wheeling scored two goals in the first period off of turnovers to build a 2-0 lead with scores 23 seconds in and 9:41 in. The Nailers made it 3-0 shorthanded 9:36 into the second period after the game was 2-0 for 19 minutes and 58 seconds.
The Grizzlies answered 1:25 later as Mathieu Aubin and Barry Almeida worked the puck up to Michael Pelech who scored his team leading 11th goal of the year as he extended his scoring streak to six-straight games.
The Nailers added a power-play goal early in the third to get their three-goal lead back before the Grizzlies again quickly answered. 2:09 after falling behind 4-1, the Grizzlies got back within two as Johnnie Searfoss won a face-off back to Jacob Johnston who fired the puck in before Brent Gwidt tipped it home.
With just over four minutes left, the Grizzlies pulled goaltender Joe Howe trying to get things going six-on-four before Wheeling was able to get an empty-netter on their third try following two big blocks by Matt Pelech.
Utah wraps up their road trip Saturday in Wheeling at 5:30 p.m.
