December 5, 2014 - ECHL (ECHL)
Greenville Swamp Rabbits News Release
Greenville, SC - The Greenville Road Warriors (13-9-0-0), proud ECHL affiliate of the New York Rangers and the AHL's Hartford Wolf Pack, exploded for five goals in the first period on Friday in a 7-2 rout of the Orlando Solar Bears (11-10-2-0) on "Teddy Bear Toss" night at the Bon Secours Wellness Arena. Forwards Kyle Jean and Trevor Parkes each scored twice, while Vinny Saponari earned a career-high four assists in front of 5,673 fans.
Between the pipes, Jeff Malcolm (11-4-0) continued to impress with 42 saves on 44 shots for his league-best 11th win this season. Malcolm also improved to 6-0-0 at SANDLAPPER Securities Rink this year with his third straight win overall.
Shawn O'Donnell opened the scoring with a shorthanded tally just 5:02 into the contest and directed the teddy bears onto the ice with his third goal this season. With Spencer Humphries in the box for holding, O'Donnell grabbed the puck and entered the zone on a 2-on-1 break before firing a shot off the crossbar and past goaltender Garret Sparks.
Jean extended the lead just 37 seconds later with another shorthanded goal of the same power play. Following a turnover at the blue line, Jean won the race to a loose puck in the neutral zone and skated in on a breakaway. As he neared the Orlando net, Jean placed a forehand shot past Sparks' right pad for his seventh goal this season.
Parkes continued the scoring at the 8:34 mark when he cruised to the slot and capitalized on a one-timer from Saponari. It was Parkes' fourth goal this season, which forced the Solar Bears to replace Sparks with Maxime Clermont between the pipes.
Greenville continued to produce at 9:21 of the opening frame courtesy of Jean's second goal of the contest. From the perimeter, Humphries sent a drive to the front of the net that snuck behind Clermont, where Jean poked it home from the doorstep. Jean now leads the club with eight goals this season.
Parkes made it 5-0 with his second goal of the night on another 2-on-1 break at the 10:04 mark. Skating in from the right side, Parkes found himself wide open with the puck and buried it past Clermont's blocker to complete the five-goal frame. Saponari, playing in his 100th professional game, recorded an assist on the tally.
The Road Warriors made it a six-goal advantage at 9:57 of the second period when Chris McCarthy cleaned up a rebound from the doorstep for his third tally in the last two nights. Tyler Brown earned Greenville's final goal at 14:12 of the second with his fifth marker this season. From behind the goal line, Saponari played a centering feed to Brown in front for a quick shot past Clermont's left pad.
The Solar Bears scored their only goals at 11:06 of the second, and 16:15 of the third period respectively. In the middle frame, Brock Montgomery notched his sixth of the season on a one-timer from Greg Miller. In the third, Mickey Lang punched home his fifth goal of the season from the crease.
The Road Warriors finished the game 1-for-2 on the power play and a perfect 3-for-3 on the penalty kill. Sparks (2-2-0) made just six saves on seven shots and suffered the loss, while Clermont stopped 17 of the 21 shots he faced.
Orlando outshot Greenville 44-30.
The Road Warriors have now scored 19 goals in their last three games combined. Saponari's four assists also tied a franchise-best since moving to Greenville in 2010.
