Charlotte Checkers News Release

(Charlotte, North Carolina – Tuesday, January 27 ) While Charlotte residents were finding it difficult to deal with the ice on area roadways, the South Carolina Stingrays found the ice at Cricket Arena quite to their liking. Ed Courtenay scored two goals and goalie Kirk Daubenspeck made 33 saves in the leading the Stingrays to a 3-1 victory over the Checkers Tuesday night. Jim Lorentz added a third goal for the Stingrays who also dented Charlotte's 7th best in the ECHL penalty killing unit for two goals in the win. After being shut out for the first two periods, the Checkers didn't score until Rory Rawlyk's unassisted goal in the third period with only 2:35 left in the contest. Charlotte has been shut out in in 15 of its' last 17 periods. The loss was also the Checkers fifth in its last six games.

"When you're not scoring you have to show some desperation and we aren't showing it," commented Checkers Coach Don MacAdam. "South Carolina has a good team and a good power play and they got two power-play goals tonight. St. Germain has given up only five goals in the last three games and has only one win to show for it. But this is a team game and that doesn't seem fair to him with how well he's played."

The Stingrays struck for two, first period power-play goals to grab a 2-0 advantage. Courtenay scored his first of two goals on the night at 11:09, batting home his own rebound. At 15:06 Jim Lorentz scored, again with the Stingrays enjoying the man advantage, for a 2-0 first period lead. The Stingrays made it 3-0 at 4:06 of the second period as Courtenay fired in his second goal of the game for a 3-0 South Carolina lead. The Stingrays three-goal lead held until late in the third period when Rawlyk's goal averted a shutout.

The Checkers record dropped to 19-18-5 for 43 points as Charlotte fell five points behind the Stingrays for the fourth and final playoff spot in the Southern Division. South Carolina picked up two points and now sports a record of 23-14-2 for 48 points. The Checkers continue their four-game week Thursday night in Greensboro where they'll battle the Generals at 7:00 p.m. Charlotte returns to Cricket Arena Friday night to host the Florence Pride at 7:30 p.m.
