Blades Fall to Ice Pilots 3-2 in a Shootout

ESTERO, FL - The Florida Everblades (23-14-8) lost to the Pensacola Ice Pilots (21-15-5) 3-2 in a shootout in front of 5,057 at TECO Arena Tuesday night.

Trailing 2-0 in the third period, the Ice Pilots got goals from forwards Aaron Phillips and Tyler Beechey to send the game into overtime. The game would be determined in a shootout when Brian Collins shootout goal past Everblades netminder Robb Zepp would be the difference after Matt Pagnutti failed on his attempt.

Florida got off to a dominant start that would finally be rewarded in the second period when forward Chris Heisten banked a loose puck at the side of the net off Pensacola goaltender Brian Eklund for his 4th goal of the year. The Everblades doubled their lead 42 seconds later when Jay Legault one timed a beautiful Carl Mallette pass into the net for his 7th goal of the season. Florida led 2-0 through two periods. They also held a 31-7 edge in shots on goal after two periods.

The Everblades roared out of the locker room quickly outplaying Pensacola in the opening period. Despite outshooting the Ice Pilots 16-2 both teams headed into the first intermission scoreless.

Zepp stopped 31 of 33 shots. Eklund stopped 53 of 55 shots. Florida finished 0 for 6 on the power play while Pensacola went 0 for 1.

The Everblades are back home on Friday January 30th when they begin a two game homestand with the South Carolina Stingrays. Game time is 7:30.
