Louisiana IceGators News Release

Lafayette, LA – After a record setting performance this weekend, the ECHL has named IceGators winger Alex Materukhin the InGlasCo ECHL Player of the Week. For the 22 year-old native of Kiev, Ukraine, it is his first league-wide honor.

Materukhin added his name to the IceGators record book on Sunday, with the fastest hat trick in the nine-year history of the team. With the IceGators holding on to a 1-0 lead in the 2nd period against the Florida Everblades, the second year pro scored the next three goals, a natural hat trick, in just 3 minutes and 22 seconds. It was the first hat trick of his pro career and just the second three-goal performance by an IceGator this season. For the week, Materukhin finished with six points (3-3-6), as the Louisiana won all three games played and ran its season high winning streak to seven consecutive victories.

In addition to his record setting performance, Materukhin had two assists in a 5-1 win at Texas on January 23 and had an assist in the IceGators' 4-0 win over Texas on January 24 and was +6 for the three game set. With 31 games left in the season, Materukhin has 13 goals, which matches the total he scored last season as a rookie playing for Richmond.

The IceGators almost made a clean sweep of the weekly awards as Derek Gustafson was runner up for the ITECH HOCKEY ECHL Saver of the Week. Last weekend, the former Minnesota Wild netminder had an outstanding three game set going 3-0-0, 0.67 GAA, .978 save pct. Gustafson stopped 88 of 90 shots and now leads the team with 15 wins.

The IceGators put their seven game win streak on the line this Friday when they host the Mississippi Sea Wolves at 7:05pm. First place will be on the line and it's a special College Night promotion. All college students can get in for $5.00 with a valid ID, in addition to the college discount the Cajundome will be serving $2.00 beer to all fans 21 year of age or older.
