Wheeling Nailers News Release
WHEELING, WV - The Wheeling Nailers dropped their first game on home ice this season 6-2 against the South Carolina Stingrays Friday night at WesBanco Arena. The game featured five powerplay goals, a shorthanded tally and only two even-strength goals.
South Carolina jumped out of the gate with their first goal just 3:13 into the game. Scott Romofo's point shot found its way through traffic in front and past David Brown for the powerplay goal.
Matt Reid, playing in his first game of the season after beginning the year on the injured reserve, netted his first of two at 14:21 of the first. With Wheeling on the man-advantage, Reid was able to rip a wrist shot just over the glove of Brown from the high slot.
The Nailers drew the score to within one just 2:20 later. On beautiful passing around the goal, Sean Collins pass wound up on the stick of David Laliberte waiting on the doorstep for his first professional goal.
It took almost a full period before Travis Morin scored the game's next goal. At 12:15 of the second period Morin was able to sneak a shot past Brown for his second goal of the year.
The final five minutes of the second period featured three more goals. Sean Collins and Ned Havern were able to set up Kevin Croxton for his third goal of the season but 6 seconds after the Nailers returned to the penalty box. With Michael Handza in the box Havern followed, giving the Stingrays a 5-on-3. Patrick McNeill responded with a blast from the blue line to secure another two-goal advantage.
With the power play still in effect Reid deflected one home with just 6 seconds remaining in the period.
Tommy Maxwell would add the sixth Stingrays goal with 1 minute remaining in the third.
Wheeling was 2 for 8 on the powerplay while South Carolina finished 3 for 10. Davis Parley made 37 saves for the Rays while Brown took his first loss by stopping 29.
The Nailers continue their four-game homestand Saturday against the Dayton Bombers. The first 2,500 fans receive WesBanco Buck Collector's Cups.
