Cyclones Win Home Opener, 5-3, v. Trenton

CINCINNATI - Cincinnati Cyclones rookie forward David Desharnais scored a pair of goals and defenseman Bryan Schmidt broke a 3-3 tie with a power play goal 40 seconds into the third period, to give the club a 5-3 win over Trenton on Friday night. The victory came in the Cyclones home opener at U.S. Bank Arena.

Trenton opened the scoring 2:53 into the first period, as Eric Castonguay netted his third goal of the season with assists from Trevor Kell and Jim Henkel. The Cyclones knotted the game at 1-1 at the 14:45 mark, as David Desharais picked up his second marker of the season with Jean-Michel Daoust and Mathieu Aubin adding the assists. The Cyclones dominated the period with a 13-7 shots on goal advantage.

In the second period, the Cyclones grabbed the lead when Desharnais netted his second goal of the night and third of the season at 4:16. Rookie Travis Fuller and Aubin tallied the assists on the score. Cincinnati's lead was extended to 3-1 less than three minutes later when Fuller picked up his third of the campaign at 7:15, as Thomas Beauregard added the helper.

Trenton closed out the middle frame with a pair of goals. Both came from sixth year pro Jim Henkel. The first was at 9:55 on the power play and the second was at 12:15. The Devils outshot Cincinnati, 13-11, in the period.

Defenseman Bryan Schmidt scored a power play goal 40 seconds into the final frame to give the Cyclones the lead for good. Tyler Howells and Daoust had the assists. Thomas Beauregard added an insurance marker on his first pro goal at 17:38 to ice the game. That was an unassisted goal.

Cedrick Desjardins got the win, stopping 21 shots.

With the victory, Cincinnati improves to 2-0 on the season, while the defeat put Trenton at 1-3.

The Cyclones and Devils meet again Saturday night (Oct. 27) at 7:30pm at U.S. Bank Arena.
