South Carolina Stingrays News Release
NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. -The South Carolina Stingrays got 7 goals from 7 different players on their way to winning their opening night game against the Colombia Inferno 7-3 at the North Charleston Coliseum.
The Stingrays kicked off their 15th anniversary season in style by potting 7 goals in what was a strange game, by anyone's standards. South Carolina got on the board first on a goal by defenseman Tim Judy, his first of the season. The goal, which came at 9:36 of the 1st period, was assisted by Cail MacLean and Paul McIlveen. The Inferno would tie it back up less than a minute later, but the tie wouldn't last for long. 18 seconds later the Stingrays struck back with Matt Scherer's first goal of the season from Pierre-Luc O'Brien and Nate Kiser.
They would get 2 more before the period was out, as Grant McNeill would score a short handed goal, off a shot from behind the red line, and MacLean would score a 5 on 3 goal.
Just 26 seconds into the 2nd period, the Inferno cut the lead to 2, but again, the Stingrays responded, with goals by Travis Morin and Chris Chaput. For Morin, the goal was his first of the season and was assisted by Cail MacLean and Patrick McNeill. For Chaput, his goal was assisted by Stephen Werner and Marty Guerin.
After 2 periods of play the Stingrays had a 6-3 lead. The 3rd period was much more evenly matched as both teams had chances, but were unable to capitalize. But half way through the period, Bryan Esner scored on a 4 on 4 situation, his first goal of the season, with assists from O'Brien and McNeill.
The Stingrays went 2 for 9 on the power play, scoring two 5 on 3 goals. On the penalty kill, the Rays killed off 8 of 10 short handed situations.
Davis Parley stopped 26 of 29 shots on the night, in getting his first win of the season.
The Stingrays travel to Augusta to take on the Lynx in the first game of a 5 game road trip. Game time will be at 4:05.
