Idaho Steelheads News Release
Boise, ID - Rookies Mark Bomersback (2g, 1a) and Colin Sinclair (1g, 2a) each tallied three points to lead the Steelheads to a 4-2 win over the Salmon Kings in front of 4,030 fans at Qwest Arena on Saturday night.
The victory helps the Steelheads (1-0-1) take three out of a possible four points from the Salmon Kings (1-1-0). Last season the Steelheads posted 42 wins in the regular season, with 20 of those coming on home ice.
The Steelheads took a 1-0 lead getting on the board at 9:19 of the opening period on a shorthanded marker by rookie Aaron Gagnon, his first professional tally. Fellow rookie Richard Clune, making his ECHL debut, got the lone assist as he carried the puck into the offensive zone and slipped a pass to Gagnon who was driving hard towards the crease.
Just under three minutes later the Salmon Kings answered on a breakaway goal by Milan Gajic, his first of the season. On the even-strength play, Gajic snuck behind the Steelheads defense and took a long feed from Jordan Krestanovich before beating Steelheads' goaltender John Daigneau (32 saves) five-hole.
Early in the second period Bomersback picked up his second goal of the season, taking a Gagnon feed and blasting a one-timer from the slot past Salmon Kings' netminder Billy Thompson (25 saves). Sinclair grabbed the second assist.
Once again Gajic tied the contest potting his second of the contest at the 9:21 mark. With a Steelheads' power play just expiring, Gajic found a bouncing puck off a scramble in front of Daigneau and was able to slip the puck just inside the left post. Captain Kiel McLeod and Dylan Yeo picked up the assists.
The Steelheads took their third lead of the night on Sinclair's first pro goal with 3:19 left in the second period. With bodies crashing down around Thompson, Sinclair found the loose puck and slipped it just inside the right post. Bomersback and Greg Rallo were credited with the assists.
After 40 minutes of play, the Salmon Kings led in shots 26-22 thanks in large part to 20 chances in the second stanza.
Bomersback made it 4-2 rounding out the scoring with his second of the night at 7:23 of the third period, taking a Rallo pass from just outside the crease and beating Thompson glove side. Sinclair added his third point of the night on the play.
The final shots favored the Salmon Kings 34-29, with the two teams combining for 10 power plays.
The Steelheads head to the road for the first time this season, taking on the Utah Grizzlies on Friday, October 26. The puck drops at 7:05 p.m. MST. All the action can be heard on 1350 KTIK "The Ticket" beginning 20 minutes prior to face-off, or via the B2 Networks. Don't forget, Steelheads' single-game tickets can be purchased via www.idahosteelheads.com (using the print-at-home feature), by calling 331-TIXS or from the Qwest Arena box office.
