South Carolina Stingrays News Release
North Charleston, SC - After falling 9-7 to them just two weeks ago, the South Carolina Stingrays played a game that could not have been any more different falling to the Trenton Devils by a final of 2-1.
"Both teams played hard tonight," said Head Coach Jared Bednar. "Obviously I'd like to have seen our power play step up at the end of the game, but give Trenton credit, they played their game."
The first period featured a tightly contested 20 minutes of play between the Rays and the Devils. The only scoring that took place was a power play tally by Justin Coutu. The goal came at the final second of their second power play, coming at 14:48, was assisted by Jeff Prough and David Leaderer, making it a 1-0 game after one period of play.
The Rays were able to tie the game up at one on Pierre-Luc O'Brien's 16th goal of the year. The goal came early in the period, at 1:55, and was assisted by Bryson Busniuk and Jeff Corey. The game would not stay tied for too long, as Trenton was able to retake the lead before the end of the period. While on the power play, Ryan Gunderson got his fourth goal of the year on a slapper from the blue line. The goal came at 16:17 of the period and was assisted by Jim Henkel and Eric Castonguay, making it a 2-1 game after two periods of play.
The third period continued to be a defensive struggle with both teams getting limited chances on net. By the end of the game, with the Rays still trailing by one, they pulled their goaltender Jonathan Boutin in favor of the extra attacker. But even with the extra man, the Rays were unable to get the tying goal, and ended up falling 2-1 to Trenton.
The winning goaltender was Gerald Coleman who stopped 39 of the 40 shots he faced. The losing goaltender was Boutin who stopped 30 of the 32 shots he faced. The Rays went 0-4 on the power play while killing off four of the six short handed situations they faced.
