Rechlicz Increases ECHL Players In NHL To 398

PRINCETON, N.J. - Former Utah Grizzlies right wing Joel Rechlicz became the 398th player to play in the National Hockey League after the ECHL when he made his debut on Thursday with the New York Islanders in a 4-2 loss to the New York Rangers.

The 21 year old, who was signed as a free agent by the Islanders on May 6, 2008, assisted on a second-period goal by Blake Comeau that tied the game at 1-1.

Rechlicz played the first 45 games of the season with the Grizzlies and had one assist and 110 penalty minutes before being reassigned on Feb. 17 to Bridgeport of the American Hockey League where he had seven penalty minutes in three games before being called up on Thursday.

He is the second former Grizzly in less than a week to play his first NHL game joining defenseman Andrew MacDonald who made his debut with the Islanders on Feb. 28. The head coach of the Islanders is former ECHL player and coach Scott Gordon while former ECHL player Daniel Lacroix is an assistant coach for New York. Three other ECHL players have made their debut with the Islanders this season: former Columbus Cottonmouths and Tallahassee Tiger Sharks left wing Mitch Fritz on Oct. 30, former ECHL All-Star and Wheeling Nailers center Kurtis McLean on Jan. 19 and former Augusta Lynx defenseman Brett Skinner on Oct. 27.

The Premier 'AA' Hockey League, the ECHL has affiliations with 24 of the 30 teams in the NHL, marking the 12th consecutive season that the league has had affiliations with at least 20 teams. The Grizzlies are the ECHL affiliate of the Islanders.

There have been 43 former ECHL players who have made their debut this season and 142 have played their first NHL game in the last four seasons, including a record 47 who made their debut in 2005-06. Seventy-two former ECHL players were on NHL opening-day rosters this season and 333 ECHL players attended NHL training camps, including 139 who played in the league last season.

Former ECHL coaches working as head coaches in the NHL are Gordon and Bruce Boudreau of the Washington Capitals while former ECHL player Dan Bylsma is the interim head coach of the Pittsburgh Penguins. Boudreau, who coached Mississippi for three seasons winning the Kelly Cup championship in 1999, was named NHL Coach of the Year in 2007-08 becoming the first former ECHL coach to receive the award. Peter Laviolette, who began his coaching career with the Wheeling Nailers, led Carolina Hurricanes to the Stanley Cup in 2006. There are 18 assistant coaches in the NHL who were players or coaches in the ECHL.



The ECHL is represented for the eighth consecutive year on the National Hockey League championship team in 2008 by Aaron Downey of the Detroit Red Wings.

Barton, Joannette, Leggo, McCauley, Nowak, Pollock, Rooney and Sharrers all worked the 2008 Stanley Cup Playoffs.
