Victoria Salmon Kings News Release

Boise, ID - In a Friday night match-up the Victoria Salmon Kings and Idaho Steelheads met for the second game of their three-game set. Goaltender Todd Ford started in net for the Kings while the Steelheads countered with Rejean Beauchemin.

Victoria got off to a quick start when Sean O'Connor picked off an Adam Welch pass and fired a wrist shot past Beauchemin's blocker just seven seconds into the game. It was the fastest goal to start a game or a period in Salmon Kings' history. The Steelheads would tie up the game during a 5-on-3 power play when Darrell Hay would one-time a Marty Flichel pass and find the back of the net. It was a very physical first period with both teams playing playoff style hockey. It was 1-1 after one period of play.

O'Connor was at it again to start the second when he scored his second of the night when he redirected the puck past Beauchemin. Olivier Labelle made it 3-1 when he tipped home a point shot. Idaho's Bryan McGregor would cut the lead to 3-2, but Adam Taylor would re-establish Victoria's two goal lead with his fourth of the year. Ben Nelson would move the Steelheads to within one with a power play marker, but again Victoria would respond when Matt Kelly blasted a power play goal from the high slot. The Salmon Kings led 5-3 after 40 minutes.

The Steelheads began the comeback in the third period when Mark Bomersback beat Ford with a tipped shot. Then McGregor would tie it at 5-5 when he beat a screened Ford with a wrist shot. The Steelheads would take the game with a power play goal with .5 of a second remaining on the clock when Flichel fired a shot from the slot. Steelheads 6 Salmon Kings 5.

Victoria went 2/2=100% on the power play and Idaho ended 3/5=60%. The Steelheads out shot the Salmon Kings 36-29.

The Salmon Kings and Steelheads meet tomorrow night to conclude this three-game set with puck drop at 6:10 p.m. The Kings return to action at the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre on Wednesday when the Ontario Reign comes to town for a four-game set. Tickets available at www.selectyourtickets.com.
