Idaho Steelheads News Release
BOISE, Idaho¾ The Idaho Steelheads Hockey Club announced today that team captain Marty Flichel [Flick-el] has been activated off of the injured reserve list and will be suited up for tonight's game, following a nearly three-week hiatus due to injury. Also, today the team announced that rookie Sean Garrity has been signed to an ECHL contract and is expected to see some playing time over the weekend.
Flichel, who turns 33 today, was placed on the 7-day injured reserve list on Feb. 16. At the time of his injury, Flichel was leading the Steelheads in points with 41 (13g-28a). The veteran center is playing in his 14th professional season this year, and his sixth as a Steelheads player. The Saskatchewan native captained the Steelheads through its 2007 Kelly Cup Championship run.
Garrity, a 6-2, 200-pound Minnesota native, played a couple of seasons with St. Cloud State University where he was a teammate of Steelheads All-Star defenseman Matt Stephenson, who is currently on call up to the American Hockey League. The 24-year-old forward has played the last couple of seasons at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire (Div. 3) and will return to his school on Mar. 24. Coach Laxdal said that Stephenson recommended Idaho take a look at Garrity and after losing some bodies to call ups and injuries recently, Laxdal decided to bring him in for a couple of weeks. He will be eligible for the Steelheads playoff roster should Coach Laxdal decide to bring him back.
The Steelheads continue their critical three-game homestand against division-rival Victoria tonight and tomorrow. Both games start at 7:10 pm. Idaho leads the series 1-0 after beating Victoria 3-2 in a close contest on Wednesday.
