Stingrays Fight Back to Defeat Orlando in Overtime

North Charleston, S.C. - The South Carolina Stingrays (13-10-1-4) erased a two-goal deficit in the third period and defeated the Orlando Solar Bears (14-11-3-0) 4-3 in overtime at the North Charleston Coliseum Saturday evening. With the win, the Stingrays on a five-game point streak (4-0-1-0) and are unbeaten in 10 of their last 11 contests (9-1-1-0).

Solar Bears defenseman Yann Sauve opened the scoring late in the first period slipping a shot past Stingrays goaltender Brandon Anderson (W, 28 saves on 31 shots) from the left wing circle at 18:48.

The Stingrays tied the contest 1:27 into the second period when forward John Mitchell knocked a loose puck past Solar Bears netminder Garret Sparks (OTL, 33 saves on 37 shots). Forward Andrew Cherniwchan and defenseman Guy LeBeouf added assists. The Solar Bears responded at 6:29 off a tally from former Stingrays forward Stefan Della Rovere. Forward Jacob Cepis gave Orlando a 3-1 lead at 15:20 lifting a shot over the glove of Anderson.

In the final stanza, the Stingrays scored twice to erase the two-goal deficit and force the extra session. Defenseman Drew MacKenzie pulled the game within one at 3:57 blasting a pass from forward Derek DeBlois over the glove of Sparks. Cherniwchan picked up the second assist. Two minutes later, forward Patrick Gaul knotted up game with his fourth goal of the season with help from forwards Cody Sylvester and Wayne Simpson. In overtime, Simpson tracked down a Solar Bears clearing attempt along the right wing at 3:52, cut to the middle of the ice and slipped a backhanded shot under the pads of Sparks.

The Stingrays finished the game 0-for-5 on the power play while the Solar Bears went 0-for-3.

After the Christmas Holiday Break (December 21-26) the Stingrays host the Wheeling Nailers and the North Charleston Coliseum on Saturday, December 27 at 7:05 p.m. and Sunday, December 28 at 3:05 p.m.
