South Carolina Stingrays News Release
Columbia, SC -Chris Chaput scored two goals, and newcomer Todd Griffith got a goal and an assist, as the South Carolina Stingrays doubled up the Columbia Inferno 6-3 at the Carolina Coliseum.
"The guys came out strong tonight," said Head Coach Jared Bednar. "Davis [Parley] had a strong game in net, and we just simplified our game enough to win."
South Carolina got on the board early in the first period when Chris Chaput was able to tip a Grant McNeill shot passed Jeff Jakaitis at 1:49. For Chaput it was his 22nd goal on the year, with the assists going to McNeill and Trent Campbell. Their 1-0 lead would be short lived however as Jeff Miles would tie the game up going into the second period.
Much like the first period, South Carolina got on the board very early in the second period. Just :50 seconds into the period, Matt Scherer jumped on the rebound of a Todd Griffith shot to get his 8th goal of the season. The assists went to the newest member of the Stingrays, Griffith, as well as Rory Rawylk. Griffith would find his way onto the score sheet once again as he scored his 1st goal of the year as a member of the South Carolina Stingrays, and his 14th goal of the year overall from Pierre-Luc O'Brien and Nate Kiser at 9:26. Trent Campbell would make it 4-1 on his 14th goal of the year at 10:44 from Marty Guerin and Sean Collins. With less than three minutes left to go in the period Meremy Hall was able to get his 14th goal of the year and make it a two goal game going into the third period.
Like the two periods before it, the third period started out with an early Stingrays goal. This time it came off the stick of Cail MacLean just :12 seconds into the period. The goal came on the power play from Chris Chaput, and was MacLean's 18th goal of the year. Chris Chaput would score his second goal of the game, his 23rd of the year, when the Rays were on the power play. The goal came at 7:17 from Cail MacLean and Marty Guerin. The Rays would allow one more goal, but would skate off with a 6-3 victory.
The winning goaltender was Davis Parley who stopped 29 of the 32 shots he faced. The losing goaltender was Jeff Jakaitis who stopped 31 of the 37 shots he faced. The Rays went 2-6 on the power play while killing off all six short handed situations they faced.
Prior to tonight's game Travis Morin was sent back down to the South Carolina Stingrays from the Hershey Bears. Morin had injured his hip flexor while up in Hershey. On the other side, fully recovering from a hip flexor injury, Steve Pinizzotto was recalled by the Hershey Bears.
The Rays are back in action Wednesday night when they return to the Carolina Coliseum to take on the Columbia Inferno once again. Game time will be at 7:05 P.M.
