Jackals trim Chiefs 3-2 in OT for second straight win

Elmira Jackals News Release

JOHNSTOWN, PA - Bobby Robins deflected a Kyle Wharton shot 3:13 into overtime to lift the Elmira Jackals to 3-2 sudden death win over the Johnstown Chiefs Saturday night in front of 2,516 fans as the Cambria County War Memorial.

The win was the Jackals second in as many nights after suffering through a season-high six-game losing streak while the decision ended the Chiefs' five-game winning streak.

Robins was credited for the game-winner, his club-best fifth of the year, while the Jackals worked a power play after Greg Gallagher was called for hooking 1:24 into overtime. Gallagher let Benoit Doucet loose in the left circle and was forced to take a penalty as the Elmira forward broke in alone on netminder Ryan Nie (27 saves).

After coming up empty on four power play chances in regulation, including a long 5-on-3 on the final period, the Jackals cashed in when it mattered most as Wharton and Chris Busby both initially passed up on one-timers. Wharton then sent a drive into traffic and Robins got a piece of it for his 12th of the year to give Elmira its first sudden death win on the road in four tries this season.

Rob Drummond set the stage for overtime when he slipped home a power play goal with 7:45 left in the third to tie the game at 2-2

Elmira opened the scoring for an eighth consecutive contest when Maxime Lincourt lit the lamp 10:56 of the opening frame for the only goal of the period. Benoit Doucet found Lincourt wide open in the slot and Lincourt buried his first professional goal over the blocker of Chiefs goaltender Ryan Nie for a 1-0 advantage.

After a penalty free first period, the Jackals picked up the first power play chance as Ryan Garlock was sent off for hooking. Failing to convert, the lead remained 1-0 as the Chiefs then got their first chance and made it count.

Buzzing deep in the Elmira zone with Matt Johnson off for interference, Andrew Martens finished off a whirlwind sequence by poking in his fifth goal of the year at 7:22 to even the score at 1-1.

Elmira regained the lead off an odd man rush initiated on an outlet pass by Luke Fritshaw to Pierre-Luc Faubert. Drawing a defender to him, Faubert hit a trailing Doucet who took his time and snapped a rocket home from between the hash marks for his team-high 26th goal of the year. His strike lifted the visitors to a 2-1 lead at the end of forty minutes of action.

Joel Martin snapped a personal eight-game losing streak (0-7-0-1) in making 20 saves in picking up his ECHL-leading 24th win.

The Jackals are next in action when they travel to the Sovereign Center Wednesday night for a 6:35 p.m. face-off against the reading Royals. Broadcast coverage begins at 6:05 p.m. on MAGIC-FM (92.7/97.7) and at www.jackalshockey.com with the Hill Top Inn Countdown to Face-Off.

Elmira is next in action on home ice when the Reading Royals come in for a 7:35 p.m. contest Friday night at First Arena. Good seats are still available and can be purchased at all Ticketmaster outlets including the Gray Street box office - First Arena (10 a.m. - 5 p.m. Monday through Friday), www.ticketmaster.com and charge-by-phone by calling 722-3711.
