Trenton Devils News Release
TRENTON, NJ (March 8, 2008) - The Trenton Devils launched 55 shots at the Wheeling net on Saturday, but Curtis Darling stopped all but two of them, giving his team the opportunity to take a 4-2 win. Jim Henkel netted two pucks in the loss to extend his goal-scoring streak to five games.
The Devils broke several season highs in the game. Trenton pumped in 22 shots in the second period and 55 overall, both high-water marks, and had four players take seven shots each. Sovereign Bank Arena was also host to 5,184 fans in attendance for U.S. Army Day, the most the Devils have welcomed to a contest this season.
Henkel's two goals came right in front of the crease, taking advantage of rebounds given up by Darling. The alternate captain's first tally came 9:19 into the second period, when he found a spinning puck just out of Darling's reach and pushed it by the right-side post.
After Wheeling's Joe Guenther responded with his twelfth goal of the season a minute later, Henkel once again got the Devils to within one. Coming four minutes after his first score, Henkel picked up the puck in the slot and swatted away tenaciously, finally seeing his third-chance shot go through.
Henkel now has eight points in his last five games, including six goals and two assists.
The Devils had an opportunity to tie the game with a minute-long five-on-three straddling the second and third periods, but Darling and his defenders held off the attack.
Trenton went oh-for-seven on the power play, and gave up a shorthanded goal which iced the game, as Kelly Miller raced out on a two-on-one breakout and snapped the puck past Smith.
Wheeling would jump out to a 2-0 lead off of goals by Guenther and Kyle Rank in the first and second periods, respectively. Guenther earned the top star for his performance.
The Trenton Devils host the Johnstown Chiefs Sunday, March 9 at 4:00 noon. Tune into WTSR 91.3 or go online to www.trentondevils.com and listen or watch live courtesy of B2 Networks.
