Bombers Score Early; Fall Late to Checkers in Season Series Finale
March 8, 2008 - ECHL (ECHL)
Dayton Bombers News Release
Charlotte, NC- As the Bombers (26-23-5-5) concluded their four-game swing in the Carolinas, they looked to earn their first win against the Charlotte Checkers (29-24-1-5) this season. Dayton hoped to end their two-game losing streak and get back to their winning ways before heading back up to the Nutter Center. The Bombers were able to capitalize on the first power play of the game when rookie Josh Sciba lit up the scoreboard to earn his 2nd goal as a Bomber in just three games and his 9th goal of the season. The play was set up nicely by both Mike Berry and Greg Labenski. The Sciba goal was the lone one in a period with a total of 25 shots fired on net. Jeremy Duchesne, back in goal for Dayton, kept all 13 shots he faced out of the net.
The second period brought stellar net-minding by both goalies, resulting in neither team getting the puck in the net. Dayton's Duchesne stopped the five shots that he did face in the period, with a lot of credit to the Bombers' defense. The goalie for Charlotte, Chris Holt, stopped 13 shots in the period, including a penalty shot taken by the Bombers Josh Sciba. Neither team capitalized on the power play during the period, with Dayton coming up 0 for 2 and the Checkers 0 for 1. The Bombers outshot the Checkers 25-18 through two periods.
In a shot-filled third period, another penalty shot proved to be the highlight. This one was taken by Chris Capraro of the Checkers, who succeeded in tying the game at one. Charlotte would add another goal on a power play, when Kirk DeWaele earned his 1st of the year right from the face-off shooting it past the Bombers' net-minder. The Checkers added an empty-netter with just seconds left to give them 3 goals for the game. Dayton was outshot in the period 13-10, but did outshoot the Checkers in the game 35-31.
The Bombers return to action at the Nutter Center on Friday, March 14, and Saturday, March 15, against the Trenton Devils, and Sunday, March 16, against the Cincinnati Cyclones for a three-day St. Patrick's Day weekend! The Bombers will wear specialty jerseys that will be up for bids on Saturday night (available for pick up after the game on Sunday) at a live post-game auction on the flight deck. Green beer will also be available throughout the arena!
