WORCESTER, M.A. - The Worcester Red Sox (15-19) dropped their eighth in a row on Friday night, a 6-4 loss to the International League-leading Rochester Red Wings (22-12) at Polar Park.
Darwinzon Hernandez got the start for the WooSox and delivered one of his strongest outings of the Triple-A season, tossing three innings and allowing one unearned run. The left-hander struck out three and walked just one, and 33 of his 43 pitches were in the strike zone (77%).
Rochester got its the single run against Hernandez on a pinch-hit RBI double by Taylor Gushue in the third.
The Red Wings added to their lead in the fifth with a five spot against Worcester reliever Brian Keller. Former WooSox Joey Meneses got the scoring started with a two-run double, followed by RBI singles from Josh Palacios and Donovan Casey.
But the Worcester offense responded in the fifth, starting with a solo shot from Christin Stewart. The 28-year-old snuck a ball just over the Worcester Wall in right for his fifth of the year, and after a pair of walks, Jarren Duran smashed a two-run double off the centerfield wall to make it 6-3.
Duran finished the day 2-4 with a walk and two RBI, doubling for the second time in the series.
Following Keller, Silvino Bracho and Phillips Valdez were excellent out of the bullpen; each put up two hitless innings and struck out four.
The WooSox got one more in the bottom of the ninth, a 410-foot homer to right by Yolmer Sanchez, his fifth long ball of the season. Sanchez is now slugging .490 over 32 games for Worcester, the highest mark in at least 30 games in his professional career.
That was the final run of the night, as former PawSox Jordan Weems got the final two outs to seal Worcester's season-worst eighth straight loss.
The WooSox continue the two-week homestand on Saturday afternoon at 4:05 p.m. against the Rochester Red Wings. On the mound, Carlos Martinez makes his second start for Worcester against Sterling Sharp. Television coverage is on NESN+ tape delay, while radio coverage is live at 3:45 p.m. on 98.9 Nash Icon and the WooSox Radio Network.
