Redbirds Record Four Runs on Four Hits to Win Third Straight
May 13, 2022 - International League (IL) - Memphis Redbirds News Release
MEMPHIS, TN - The Memphis Redbirds held on to win game four of a six-game series over the Norfolk Tides on Friday night by a final score of 4-2, clinching at least a series split to start the 12-game road trip.
Zack Thompson (2-0) was tremendous in his seventh start of the season. The left-hander breezed through five innings of work, allowing just one run on four hits and striking out eight batters. Friday's start was the fifth time Thompson struck out six or more batters in an appearance this season.
The Memphis lineup got the scoring started in the top of the first inning on a two-RBI triple from catcher Ivan Herrera, bringing his season RBI total to 11.
Three innings later, second baseman Evan Mendoza recorded a two-RBI extra-base hit of his own with a double to score Herrera and third baseman Cory Spangenberg.
Friday night's victory marks the Redbirds third straight win, matching the team's season high. The streak comes on the heels of a season-long five-game losing streak.
Despite loading the bases with two outs in the ninth inning and walking in a run, reliever Junior Fernandez recorded his first save of the year.
The Memphis Redbirds (18-16) return to Harbor Park for the fifth game of a six-game series against the Norfolk Tides (15-18) on Saturday, May 13 for a 5:35 p.m. CDT first pitch.
