Steelheads Top Grizzlies In Shootout, 4-3
January 13, 2010 - ECHL (ECHL)
Idaho Steelheads News Release
Boise, ID- The Idaho Steelheads (25-10-2) erased a two-goal deficit and prevailed by a 4-3 final score in a shootout over their geographical rivals, the Utah Grizzlies (16-15-4) before a crowd of 3,999 at Qwest Arena. Mark Derlago posted his second consecutive three-point night as he led Idaho with a goal and two assists.
Tom May put Utah on top at 1:40 of the first period with a power play goal; May attempted a wraparound, and slid the puck between Idaho's Rejean Beauchemin and the post to give Utah a 1-0 lead. May's goal would be the only tally in the opening frame.
At 0:26 of the second period, Ryan Kinasewich dumped a puck into the Idaho zone that deflected off a partition in the glass, bounced off the back of Beauchemin, and into the net to give Utah a 2-0 lead before the Steelheads could begin the comeback.
Riley Weselowski, who hadn't appeared in a Steelheads game since October 24th due to an injury, scored from the top of the left circle with a low shot through traffic for his first of the season, with assists going to Kevin DeVergilio and Mark Derlago at 3:52.
At 17:16, Mark Derlago scored his 12th of the season on the power play from Matt McKnight and Evan Barlow. Barlow had a pass attempt blocked, but the second try went directly to Derlago, who was open in the slot to fire a puck top-shelf on Utah's Mitch O'Keefe.
Kevin DeVergilio gave the Steelheads the lead when he snapped a wrister from the high slot to beat O'Keefe at 1:11 of the third period for his eighth of the season. Derlago and Brandan Kushniruk assisted on the go-ahead tally.
But at 14:24 of the third, Tim Crowder converted on a turnaround effort from the right circle to slide the puck by Beauchemin and tie the game, forcing an overtime period with the score tied 3-3.
Overtime would not do the game justice, so it was onto a shootout period, where Rejean Beauchemin stopped all four Utah shooters, including the league's leading goal scorer in Utah's Ryan Kinasewich. Derlago was not successful, but he was followed by Kevin DeVergilio and Evan Barlow, who did find the back of the net, and secured the Idaho win.
Beauchemin stopped 13 of 16 shots in the win to improve to 13-6-1; Utah's total of sixteen shots on net is the lowest total allowed by the Steelheads this season. O'Keefe stopped 37 of 40 shots in the Utah net; he is now 11-5-2.
The Steelheads do not play again until after the All-Star Break. They return to Qwest Arena to host the Las Vegas Wranglers on January 22nd, 23rd, and 24th. The puck will drop at 7:10 PM each night.
