'Blades Tame Reading In Shootout Win

READING, PA-- The fifth and final meeting this season between the Reading Royals and the Florida Everblades went in favor of Florida 2-1. The ‘Blades opened the scoring at 15:50 of the first with a power-play tally by Mathieu Roy. Reading tied it late in the third with a goal from Ben Gordon. The game was decided in a shootout where goalie Barry Brust dominated, turning away all seven shooters. Kevin Baker scored the only shootout goal and the game went to Florida.

During the first stanza the Florida Everblades came out with renewed fervor. The Everblades came out strong in the first period and comited only one penalty.The only marker was scored when Scott Hotham sent the puck in from Elgin Reid and Mathieu Roy shott it into the net.

Both teams had several scoring opportunities in the middle frame. Early in the period A.J. Thelen hit the post and shook Matt Dalton's water bottle. Scott Hotham ripped a shot from the inside circle forcing Dalton to make the save. Reading's Nick St. Pierre took a shot off the draw and the puck slid along the goal line and away from the goal. National Hockey League veteran Barry Brust came out to challenge the Royals offense and kicked it out with a left pad save. The period concluded 1-0 in favor of Florida.

Reading entered the third period looking for the equalizer. It looked as if they would get it when Ben Gordon broke out on the penalty kill, but Barry Brust slid over and stopped the puck. Gordon wasn't deterred and at 18:10 scored to force overtime.

Neither team scored in the overtime period and the goalies went head-to-head in a seven round shootout. Barry Brust was impenetrable and Kevin Baker beat Matt Dalton to secure the win for the Everblades.
