Reading Royals News Release

Reading, PA - The Reading Royals of the ECHL (20-13-1-344, 1st East Division), affiliate of the Toronto Maple Leafs and Boston Bruins of the National Hockey League and the Toronto Marlies of the American Hockey League, were defeated in a shootout by the Florida Everblades, 2-1, at the Sovereign Center in Reading, Pennsylvania. The Royals finally broke through with 1:50 remaining in regulation to tie the game at one and get to overtime; but fell in a seven round shootout in which only one player, Florida's Kevin Baker, scored. Goaltender Matt Dalton (SOL, 11-8-0-2; 42/43; 6/7 in shootout) came up time and again with key stops at critical moments to keep his team in this game. Florida's Barry Brust (Win, 5-2-0-2; 20/21; 7/7 in shootout) picked up the win in his return performance to the Sovereign Center, where he began his pro career in 2004-as a member of the Royals. The Royals' power play was held off the board in four chances with the man advantage (0-4); while the Everblades' only goal came on their second power chance of the night (1-5).

Florida broke through at the 15:05 mark of the first thirty-eight seconds into their first full power play opportunity of the game. Defenseman Elgin Reid fired a snap shot from the high slot that slipped through a wall of bodies in front of the Royals' net and was deflected by Mathieu Roy into Reading's net for his eighth goal of the year. The Royals, who were held to just nine shots through the first forty minutes, broke through the Everblades and Brust with just 1:50 remaining in regulation when Ryan Cruthers fed Ben Gordon low in the left circle. Gordon turned and wheeled and slid the puck under Brust for his team leading seventeenth goal of the year. The two teams played scoreless hockey through regulation time and the five minute overtime session. In the shootout, Brust rejected all seven bids by the Royals' shooters (Stefano Giliati, Olivier Labelle, Gordon, Cruthers, Eric Werner, Ben McLeod, and Marc Cavosie). Baker, shooting seventh for the Everblades, slipped a snap shot through Dalton to give the Everblades the two points.

The Royals return to action on Friday (January 15, 2010 @ 7:05 pm) when the Elmira Jackals visit the Sovereign Center. That night, the Royals will induct former defenseman Reagan Rome in the Reading Eagle Wall of Honor. The Royals game night broadcast on the Royals Radio Network presented by Transmissions by Arbogast will kick off with the pre-game warm-up show at 6:35 pm.
