Idaho Steelheads News Release
LONG BEACH, Calif. â The Idaho Steelheads picked up a point, but remained in third place in the ECHL's National Conference, West Division with a 3-2 shootout loss to the Long Beach Ice Dogs Monday night. With the win, Long Beach jumps Idaho and San Diego for second in the division. Idaho and San Diego are tied in the standings with 30 points.
"The score is not indicative of how we played. I was very pleased with how we played tonight," Steelheads Head Coach John Olver said. "I was pleased with the way we played; we attacked, we didn't sit back. We did a lot of really good things tonight."
The teams skated to a scoreless first period, and matched each other with ten shots on goal.
Bobby Russell put a marker on the board for the Steelheads early in the second period beating the Ice Dogs' netminder Chris Madden on a breakaway at 4:40. Helpers came from Brett Draney and Marty Flichel who was activated off the injured reserve list just before game time and was playing in his first game of the season.
Flichel scored his first goal of the year on a scramble in front of the Ice Dogs' net just as an Idaho power play expired. Jonathan Zion and Lance Galbraith assisted on Flichel's first goal in a Steelheads' uniform since the 2002-03 season. Just 2:02 later, Idaho turned the puck over in its own end, and Long Beach's Nathan Martz fired it past Colin Zulianello to draw the Ice Dogs to within one at 2-1.
Long Beach drew level just 4:42 into the final period when Paul Spadafora's third goal of the season beat Zulianello with a shot off the Idaho goaltender's glove to make the score 2-2. The third period ended even, and the teams headed to overtime.
Zulianello stopped a flurry of Ice Dog shots in the closing seconds to preserve the tie and send the game to a shootout. Idaho outshot Long Beach 39-32 through the extra frame.
Each team scored once on five tries in the shootout, leading to a sudden death round. Finally, Nathan Martz beat Zulianello on Long Beach's sixth shot to give the Ice Dogs the win.
The two teams face off again Wednesday night in the Long Beach Arena before Idaho returns home to face the Peoria Rivermen New Years Eve and New Years night at the Bank of America Centre.
