Idaho Steelheads News Release
BOISE, Idaho - The Idaho Steelheads came out looking to go a perfect 4-0 against the Alaska Aces this season, but were denied, losing 4-3 before 5,007 at the Bank of America Centre. Alaska's Joe Talbot and Scott Gomez combined to score eight points in the exciting victory.
Alaska scored the only goal of the first period, although Idaho outshot the Aces 11-8. The goal came at 12:41 on Alaska's only power play of the period. Joe Talbot took a shot from outside the blue line and Cal Benazic redirected it past Idaho's net minder Colin Zulianello.
Scott Burt tallied at 8:57 of the middle frame to even the score. Burt's slap shot from the point beat Alaska's goalie, Peter Aubry, stick side. Then, at 11:59 Alaska's NHL star Gomez put Alaska ahead again with a slap shot. Gomez skated into Idaho's zone, passed to Joe Talbot, who fed it back to Gomez for his second ECHL goal.
At the 9-minute mark of the third period, Idaho tied the game for a second time. Defenseman Dave Cornacchia skated the puck from his own end zone to Alaska's, and passed to Brett Draney who one-timed the puck over Aubry's right pad. Alaska successfully killed a minor penalty 12-minutes into the period by clearing their zone and preventing any good scoring chances for Idaho. Moments later the Aces turned the tables when the Talbot/Gomez duo teamed up with Gomez passing to Talbot who beat Zulianello short side. Cornacchia took a shot from the point and it deflected off a skate and on to Warren Peters' stick. The goal tied the game at three apiece, but not for long as Alaska's Talbot notched his fourth point on the night with a helper to Ryan Moren on the game-winning tally.
