Columbia nabs win vs. Checkers

Charlotte Checkers News Release
CHARLOTTE, NC â The Charlotte Checkers, riding a five-game win streak, were brought back down to Earth on Friday night in their 3-1 loss to the Columbia Inferno. These two American Conference East Division foes had already faced each other three times this year, with the Checkers going 3-0-0 in the series, but this time the Inferno seemed to trump every Checkers move.
The game looked like almost a mirror image of the last two for the Checkers, with the offense taking a little bit to get warmed up and the puck spending too much time in front of starting goalie Kelly Guard. The main difference was that the Checkers never did get the engine started, and there was no sign of what may now be trademark flurry of third-period goals. The sole Checkers goal of the game came off a beautiful Jason Dawe touch pass to left wing Dusty Jamieson, who tipped the puck into the net past a stretching Mike Minard. The assist was Dawe's fifth of the year, giving him nine points overall. Credit the second assist to defenseman Rory Rawlyk, who has shown in the past few games that he can be a physical presence on defense while still contributing on offense. Coming into the game, he led the league's defensemen in +/- with a rating of +11.
The Inferno were led by two goals from forward D'Arcy McConvey, although the second drifted into an empty net with 31 seconds remaining in the game. McConvey, who began the season with the Reading Royals of the ECHL, scored both goals off assists from center Chanse Fitzpatrick and center Brad Ralph. Ralph is head-and-shoulders above the rest of his team in the points category, upping his total to 12. Fitzpatrick's two assists secure his status as second on the team with 10 points.
Charlotte's record drops to 11-3-1, but they still sit atop the American Conference East Division. They will meet the Inferno six more times this year, including a game at Cricket Arena on Saturday, December 4. The Checkers hit the road on Saturday, November 27 to play the Pee Dee Pride, who also share the same division.
