Brampton Steelheads News Release
Mississauga, ON - The Steelheads started their season long six game home stand tonight at the Hershey Centre when they squared off against the Windsor Spitfires for their only meeting in Mississauga this season. The Spitfires swept the season series last year as the Spitfires defeated the Steelheads in both games by a score of 5-4. The Trout are coming off a 5-2 loss at the hands of Erie on Tuesday night while Windsor comes in off a 4-0 victory in Guelph against the Storm last Sunday evening. The Steelheads have alternated wins and losses in their last 15 games. The Spitfires have come in playing more consistent hockey as the team has won 7 of their last 10 games.
Windsor would be quick to strike as Logan Brown would put one past Jack Flinn on the first shot of the game for his third of the season. The goal was scored just a 1:28 into the game as it gave the Spitfires the early 1-0 lead. Brown would equal his goal total for the season after finishing off a give-and-go play with Cole Carter to give Windsor the 2-0 advantage. The Trout took advantage of a powerplay after Markus Soberg got sent off for holding as Stefan LeBlanc buried a wrist shot past goalie Garret Hughson to cut the lead to 2-1. The goal was set up after Everett Clark won the draw clean to LeBlanc as he recorded the only assist on the play. Shots in the frame were 13-10 Spitfires.
The second period saw a ton of back and fourth action between to the two teams as they both tried to take a strangle hold of the game. Damian Bourne would strike first in the frame as he deflected the Alexander Nylander shot past Hugh son for his seventh goal of the season and Mississauga's second powerplay goal of the game to tie it at 2-2. Sean Day drew the other assist on Bourne's tally. However, Cristiano DiGiacinto would reply just 14 seconds after Bourne for his ninth of the year to restore Windsor's one goal lead. The Steelheads didn't let the speedy response from the Spitfires slow them down as they generated a steady stream of shots towards the Windsor net. That steady stream would come through for the Trout as Owen Tippett sniped a bullet by Hughson for his third of the season to tie the game up at 3-3. Luke Kutkevicius and Stephen Gibson assisted on the goal. The Steelheads looked to gain momentum after tying up the game for the second time in the period. However, history would repeat itself as Cristiano DiGiacinto would score his second of the game and tenth of the season just 12 seconds after Tippett goal to give the Spitfires their third lead of the game heading into the third period. Shots in the period were 11-10 Steelheads, 23-21 Spitfires total
Mississauga entered the third looking to tie the game up for the third time. They completed that early in the third as Michael McLeod would finish off a tic-tac-toe playing pass between him, Alex Nylander and Nathan Bastian for his sixth goal of the season. Windsor would take their fourth lead of the game minutes later as Mikhail Sergachev would squeeze one five-hole on Jack Flinn and give the Spitfires a 5-4 lead. Markus Soberg would extend the lead to 6-4 as he buried his second goal of the year past Flinn for Windsor's second two goal lead of the game. Mississauga would have plenty of chances to try and tie the game but to no luck as Garret Hughson would turn away everything sent his way. Aaron Luchuk would score an empty netter to put the game out of reach and give the Spitfires a 7-4 victory. Shots in the period were 15-6 Steelheads, 36-29 Steelheads for the game.
Mississauga will continue their homestand as they face off against the Sudbury Wolves Sunday afternoon at the Hershey Centre in hopes to end their mini two game skid. The Trout will also play Wednesday at 11AM against the Hamilton Bulldogs for their annual school day game.
