November 13, 2015 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Niagara IceDogs News Release
The IceDogs lost a hard fought 6-3 battle to the Ottawa 67's on Friday night, outshooting them in the contest 37-29.
The IceDogs were able to fight back strongly in the first period, after they went down 2-0 early in the game. Johnny Corneil won a hard fought battle in front of the net to bang home a loose puck that was cause by Jordan Maletta driving the crease hard with a power move. This would get the IceDogs on the board and cut the deficit in half and help put some momentum back in their favour, with numerous other scoring chances that put the pressure on Ottawa. The shots were knotted at 10 a piece after the first twenty minutes.
The second period was full of goals as the game really started to open up offensively. The 67's would take a 4-1 lead in the period, but the IceDogs were not ready to go away just yet. Captain Anthony DiFruscia brought the home team back within two, as he drove the net hard and potted home a rebound off an initial shot from Jordan Maletta. Mikkel Aagaard would help the team pull within one as he snapped a wrist shot top shelf on 67's goaltender Liam Herbst. The IceDogs would come within inches of tying the game near the end of the frame, as DiFruscia was stopped on a shorthanded breakaway, and Maletta rang one off the posts just moments later, but the score would remain 5-3 heading into the third. Shots on goal favoured the IceDogs in the period, 15-13.
The IceDogs would do everything they could to try to tie the game in the third but the puck luck just wasn't going their way. After the 67's took a 5-3 lead in the third the IceDogs would get their chance to capitalize on a 5-on-3 of their own. They spent a majority of two minutes buzzing around the Ottawa zone doing everything they could to get one on the scoreboard, coming incredibly close to scoring on numerous occasions, keeping the crowd on the edge of their seats. The team pulled the goaltender with just under two minutes left for the extra attacker, and it was like deja vu, with the Dogs flying around the 67's end once again. Niagara just couldn't capitalize as Ottawa would finally score an empty netter to cap off the game. The IceDogs loss wasn't for lack of effort as they doubled up the 67's in shots on goal in the frame, 12-6.
Jordan Maletta was acknowledged as the games' second star, with three assists on the evening.
The IceDogs will be back in action tomorrow night, to face off against the defending Memorial Cup champion Oshawa Generals. The game is the official kick off of the "Just Stop It" Anti-Bullying campaign, so we encourage all fans to come out and help us take a stand against bullying. In recognition of the Anti-Bullying game, there will be a special $13 student rate for all seats for tomorrow night's game only. Puck drop is at 7:00 PM. Tickets for this and all other IceDogs home games are still available for this game and can be purchased at all IceDogs' ticketing locations.
