North Bay Battalion News Release

SUDBURY, Ont. - Steve Harland scored two second-period goals, his first in the Ontario Hockey League, to power the North Bay Battalion to a 5-2 victory Friday night over the Sudbury Wolves.

Daniil Vertiy, making his Battalion debut after being acquired in a trade with the Windsor Spitfires, and Mike Amadio had one goal and one assist apiece, and Brett McKenzie added an empty-net goal.

Goaltender Jake Kment, in a sixth consecutive start, made 19 saves for North Bay, which has a won-lost-extended record of 8-8-2 for 18 points, fourth in the Central Division.

Danny Desrochers and Brandon Bastasin scored for Sudbury, while goaltender Zack Bowman faced 21 shots. The Wolves, who have lost their last five games since a 4-3 road win Oct. 28 over the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds, are 5-13-1 for 11 points, fifth in the division.

Harland, called up from the junior A Powassan Voodoos for two road games last week, gave the Battalion a 2-1 lead at 2:13 of the second period off a left-wing rush. The goal was assisted by Jake Ramalho, with his first OHL point, and Cam Dineen.

Harland struck again for what proved to be the winner on the power play at 12:06, dashing to the left side of the crease to corral a rebound off the end boards and shovel the puck into a gaping net as Bowman failed to get across in time.

Zach Poirier leveled Sudbury's Macauley Carson with a clean check at centre ice in the 17th minute, and Nicholas Romero tried to engage Poirier, who had none of it and watched Romero go off alone with a crosschecking call and a misconduct.

On the Wolves' best chance of the period, Kment denied Ben Garagan at the goaltender's left post on a solo break-in in the 10th minute.

Vertiy scored his third goal of the season with the man advantage at 19:06 of the first period when he deflected a Dineen shot from the blue line. Amadio drew the other assist.

Desrochers tied it 30 seconds later, getting to the goalmouth to take a pass from Michael Pezzetta in the right-wing corner and deking Kment on the backhand.

Vertiy had another solid scoring chance in the first minute of the second period when he darted beween two defenders only to backhand the puck high.

Kment made a fine stop on Pezzetta just 3:43 into the game when he was one of two Wolves in alone after stripping McKenzie of the disc.

Amadio made it 4-1 at 8:58 of the third period, converting a Vertiy pass off a two-on-one rush for the Battalion's league-leading eighth shorthanded goal.

Defenceman Bastasin put a heavily screened slap shot past Kment at 10:00 before McKenzie, who had hit the post seconds earlier, scored into an empty net at 18:51 with Bowman gone for a sixth attacker.

The Battalion conducts its Remembrance Day Salute when it hosts the Barrie Colts at 2 p.m. Sunday. The Troops will wear camouflage-themed sweaters and socks.
